Troop 982 is a Scouting America troop in Leesburg, Virginia. Founded in 1982, we have been developing scouts into confident young men by providing opportunities in Leadership, Service, and Adventure for 40 years. Our size and mission-oriented approach in developing scouts has remained consistent through time. Troop 982 has had over 150 scouts reach the rank of Eagle Scout; a true testament to the dedication of the scouts, parents, committee, and adult leadership.
Troop 982 is a "boy-led" troop promoting a safe mentoring environment for the boys to both learn from, and teach each other, a wide variety of skills through practical application and use of the EDGE method interactive learning style.
Dedicated adult leadership, isolated from any committee position, provides guidance and supervision at every meeting and outing and adheres to Scouting America guidelines of Two-Deep leadership at all times. All leaders adhere to Scouting America Youth Protection requirements and maintain up-to-date certifications for both YPT and additional training, as necessary for troop activities.
Many parents take part in our vibrant and active Troop Committee. While parents are not required to have a committee position, they are encouraged to join, or simply attend and take part in the discussion.
The Troop meets every Tuesday at 7:00 pm at the Leesburg Moose Lodge 1041 located at 43 Catoctin Circle, Leesburg, VA 20175. The Troop aims to hold at least one outing each month and at least one patrol event every 6 months. Our outings tend to be within 90 minutes of Leesburg and have ranged from Backpacking on the Appalachian Trail, to a Lock-In at SportRock Climbing Center, to Canoeing on the Potomac. Longer-distance trips have included Hershey Park, Battleship New Jersey, and the Green Bank Observatory. A patrol event might be a Patrol Backpacking Trip, a Bike Ride on the W&OD to Monk's BBQ, or a trip to an Escape Room. Almost all unit and patrol activities are pitched and voted on by the scouts. Once a month, the Scout-led leadership committee (the PLC) holds planning meeting to discuss upcoming meetings and events.
Troop 982 is proud to be an active High Adventure Troop. We have a standing committee position dedicated to High Adventure, and the troop generally arranges a different High Adventure opportunity each summer. In the past four years, Troop 982 has sent boys to Northern Tier (2020), Philmont (2021), Sea Base - Key West (2022), and Summit Bechtel Reserve (2023).
During the summer of 2024, scouts attended Philmont for a 12-day trek. Keeping the spirit of High Adventure alive, and because high adventure requires significant planning in advance, the Troop is also already planning to return to Northern Tier in 2025 in addition to sending crews to Sea Base - St. Thomas!
Every year, Troop 982 attends summer camp for one week where our Scouts can camp, swim, earn merit badges, and have summertime fun. Camp locations vary each year. In addition to regular Scout programming, these camps also offer a program exclusively for those Scouts who are attending a summer camp for the first time, which is greatly beneficial to our first-year Scouts. These first-year programs are designed to work on core Scout skills for rank advancement, and a merit badge or two, along with other first-year Scouts from all over the area. The boys always look forward to these memorable camp experiences!
In 2024, the troop attended Camp Bashore in Jonestown, PA. The Bashore Scout Reservation is located on 400 acres and nestled in the foothills of the Blue Mountains in central Pennsylvania. The camp offered over 50 merit badge opportunities such as shooting sports, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, outdoor skills, hiking, field sports, and more. Our first-year campers participated in the Blue Mountaineers program. Through this program, they worked on rank skills, as well as, merit badges.
We are excited to announce that, based on a majority vote led by the scouts, they have chosen to return to Bashore Scout Reservation for summer camp in 2025!
