We love using technology and humor to get your attention online—but when Wednesday night or Saturday morning rolls around, the screens go away.
Troop 82 is a youth-led outdoor and leadership program. That means the adults provide the safety net and transportation, while the Scouts themselves plan the menus, pitch the tents, teach the skills, and lead the troop.
A typical year with Troop 82 includes:
Monthly Outdoor Adventures: Camping, hiking, canoeing, whitewater rafting, indoor rock climbing, caving, and orienteering.
Serious Campfire Cooking: We don't just survive on cold granola bars—our patrols compete over campfire pizzas, Dutch oven cobblers, and outdoor grilling.
History & Travel: Walking the trails where history happened, from Gettysburg and Fort Ticonderoga to Valley Forge, Boston, and NYC.
Giving Back to LaGrange: Running community food drives, helping out at the Eskimo Run, supporting local blood drives, and showing up for LaGrange Community Day.
Want to Check Us Out? Here Is How a Visit Works (No Uniform Required)
Walking into a new group for the first time can feel intimidating for both kids and parents. We make visiting Troop 82 completely low-pressure:
1. Drop Us a Quick Heads-Up Send our Scoutmaster a quick email so we know you're coming and aren't away on an off-site activity that night.
2. Show Up at 6:30 PM in Regular Clothes You don't need to register, pay a dime, or buy a uniform to visit. Your child will be paired up with friendly youth leaders to jump right into whatever hands-on skill, game, or campout planning we are doing that night.
3. Parents Grab a Chair & Chat While the Scouts are busy, you can hang out with our Scoutmaster and other Troop 82 parents to ask honest questions about gear, schedules, and how the troop works. You’ll also get to witness our famous closing circle—complete with youth announcements, a weekly Dad Joke, and a British Moment—before we wrap up right at 8:00 PM.
Q: My son plays sports / is in band / has other clubs. Can he still be in Troop 82? A: Absolutely. Almost all of our Scouts play school or travel sports, play instruments, or do other clubs. Scouting isn't an "all-or-nothing" bench sport—if your child misses a Wednesday meeting or a campout because of a game or concert, nobody loses their spot. They simply jump back in the following week.
Q: My child was never in Cub Scouts. Will they feel behind? A: Not at all! Many of our most active Scouts—and several Eagle Scouts—joined in middle school with zero prior Scouting experience. Older Scouts teach new Scouts the basics (knots, fire safety, pitching a tent) right away so everyone feels capable before their first campout.
Q: Do we have to buy a mountain of expensive camping gear right away? A: No! Please don't go on a shopping spree before visiting. The troop owns all the big group gear (tents, patrol kitchens, stoves, cooking gear). To start out, all a new Scout really needs for a weekend trip is a sleeping bag, a sleeping pad, weather-appropriate clothes, and a flashlight.
Q: What does "Youth-Led" actually mean? Is it chaos? A: Sometimes it looks like organized chaos—and that's the point! Instead of adults barking orders, our elected youth leaders (the Senior Patrol Leader and Patrol Leaders) run the meetings and campouts. Trained adult leaders (including our Scoutmaster and our Assistant Scoutmasters) are always right there ensuring safety, guiding from the sidelines, and stepping in when needed.
