Our summer 2024 trip was up in the White Mountains in New Hampshire with Troop 604.
It was a great trip with a lot of fun activities. The Troop did a great job of working together under the leadership of their Senior Patrol Leader, Milo, Scoutmaster, Mr. Banas and Asst Scoutmaster, Mr. Whetzel.
The trip started with a fun afternoon tubing down the Saco River where we got some relaxing in on the calm waters after the long drive. Some of the troop went and used the rope swing to jump into the river.
Tuesday was a busy day, packed with exciting and fun activities. We started by taking a van tour up Mount Washington where our tour guide pointed out the geological differences in the vegetation as we ascended the mountain along with the amazing difference in weather between the top and bottom of the mountain. On that day, it was in the mid to upper 80s at the bottom and in the 50s with 30mph winds at the top. The troop got a chance to explore the top of the Mountain and do some sightseeing before going back down and enjoying our packed lunch. We then got to have an epic miniature golf tournament between youth and adults. It ended in a four-way tie between three adults and one youth. We called it a win for all and then went to celebrate by having a great dinner at Hart's Turkey Farm near Lake Winnipesaukee. This time, Milo got to enjoy some of their delicious bread.
At this point, we became aware of a weather system moving in toward the end of our trip that was likely to impact our plans. While we originally planned to stay through Thursday which would have included a hike at the Lost River Campgrounds that would have included seeing a downed B-18 bomber from the 1940s, we had to end our trip on Wednesday instead.
On Wednesday, we packed up our troop and personal gear and enjoyed a great breakfast followed by a fun day at the Whale's Tale water park where we enjoyed relaxing lazy river in tubes along with a wave pool and some exciting water slides. The scouts amazed the adults by supporting each other and going on some of the more exciting slides that some of the adult leaders decided to not go on.
All in all, this was a very successful trip with a lot of fun packed into it. Thanks to the troop leadership and youth for planning out and participating in fun events like these.
The Troop participated in the CT Yankee Council Duel of the Camps Spring Camporee. The scouts participated in a variety of Star Wars themed activities at Hoyt Scout Reservation. Effectively, each patrol that participated during the weekend competed with not only all the patrols at their camp, but rather, the patrols participating at both camps. On MAY THE 4TH, each patrol team encountered a series of several challenges that are on a trail. As each patrol reaches the challenge’s entrance, they were greeted by the station techs. The station tech explained the event / activity taking place within their drop point and any special rules or requirements of the obstacle. Some obstacles were timed events, and others may be judged on the degree of completion. Troop 604's participants were awarded a spirit award for their conduct during the event!
Devin, Dex, and Gabe participated in our Annual Shooting Sports Weekend event with Troop 721 of Milford. The scouts had the oppertunity to learn about the diffrent shooting sports, proper saftey protocols and worked towards completion of their merit badges, The scouts also enjoyed a weekend in Loomis Lodge and created a dinner meal know to them as "Golden Beef".
Dex and Devin from Troop 604-Hamden represented at the Klondike Derby up at Camp Sequassen. They teamed up with Troop 404 to form a patrol for the day. All of the boys worked great together with Devin taking the lead. Bitter cold all day with a high around 15f certainly made things interesting, but they pushed through all day and had a blast.
