Troop 604 is chartered by Sleeping Giant Park Association of Hamden, CT with the Mr. Mike Miller serving as our Institutional Representative.
The troop, founded in 1971 by Ed Flanagan, and has been serving the Hamden community for 45 plus years. Over that period of time 60 plus boys have achieved the rank of Eagle. (The highest rank in Scouts BSA) The troop has earned many awards at Council and District Camporees as well as the West Point Invitational Camporee. Additionally the Boy Scouts of America have continually recognized the troop as a National Quality Unit.
We believe that through the scouting experience that scouts can become outdoorsmen, learn self-reliance, acquire confidence, practice leadership, serve others, and learn to make ethical decisions while maturing personally.
Our current Scoutmaster is Matthew Banas. Matt has been active with the troop since 2001 as a youth and as an adult leader and in 2008 received his Eagle Scout award. He rose to the position of scoutmaster in November of 2012. In addition to his troop activities he is active at the District and Council levels as well as having served as an Assistant Scoutmaster for Connecticut Yankee Council’s National Jamboree Contingent to the 2010 National Jamboree, serving on the camping committee. Matt has served as a member of the Order of the Arrow’s Executive Committee and is formerly an Advisor to the Council’s Venturing Officers Association. He is the recipient of several awards including the Vigil Honor, Venturing Silver and Quartermaster Awards, the BSA Training Award, Achewon Chapter’s Distinguished Service Award, and the District Award of Merit.
There are in addition a number of Assistant Scoutmasters and an active Parent Troop Committee to assist in supporting the troop’s programs and activities.
