As TriValley Excel was already conducting a chess class that became the most popular class offered, the club decided to hold a community wide chess event where students from the chess class and other community children could compete with each other for a cash prize. The competition was split up into 2 skills groups, for advanced and beginner players, and designed as a round-robin tournament in which the top 3 players in each group received a cash prize. The tournament helped students especially from TriVally Excel's chess class to test the skills and knowledge that they had learned from class in a competitive environment.
