It almost seems obligatory to raise poultry when you have a farm, but they're as important as any other livestock. Poultry are how we started, as often is the case. It's how we start virtually every day, as well. "Breakfast Laid Daily" the saying goes and given that the proverbial "they" say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, the birds don't get enough credit. It may seem surprising that while we started with poultry, it comes as one of the later offerings. Poultry processing facilities are rare enough that the North Carolina Department of Agriculture an d Consumer Services allows for "slaughtering and/or processing poultry of their own raising under exemption from inspection requirements of the Poultry Products Inspection Act and the NC Poultry Products Inspection Law". This requires approval and bi-annual inspection and we were recently granted approval to process our own poultry and make it available for sale under the state's Poultry Exemption program earlier this year.

You may have noted the use of the word "poultry" rather than chicken, and that's because we're not solely raising chickens. We also have a small flock of ducks in regular rotation and have from the start. Duck is wonderful meat and duck eggs are fantastic, too. They're a bit bigger than chicken eggs, with noticeably larger yolks. We've been offering duck eggs at market alongside our chicken eggs, in case you didn't know.

We finished and processed our first round of Cornish Rock chickens early Autumn 2018; raised on organic, non-gmo feed and what ever there is to be found in the yard (the same as our egg layers). Once matured, we prepped them for sale as whole birds, quarters, breasts and tenders for portions size variety. We hope you like them as much as we have!
