This page includes a few of the assignments and projects I have completed during my time in the masters program at FSU. These include presentations on game-based learning, creating a course outline that includes virtual reality technology, and evaluating the impact of social media on online learning communities.
This presentation was created as part of a project within EDP 5216, Theories of Learning and Cognition in Instruction. For this assignment, I was tasked with covering a chapter on Learning and Digital Technology. In it, I presented some findings on gamification (the application of game strategies to learning) and how it is being applied to various learning tools. Some examples include Duolingo and Virtual Reality training.
In EME 5078 - Design of Online & Digital Adaptive Learning, I created an example of a Woodworking course that could be offered both in-person and online. This course takes advantage of virtual reality technology that would allow online students to participate in life-like woodworking projects. Technology like this is already in widespread use within nursing education, automotive repair, welding schools, and others.
In EME 6414, Web 2.0, I learned about numerous ways the internet has changed both formal and informal learning. For example, thanks to social media and other web apps, it's never been easier to engage in various learning communities. For one particular assignment, I researched how the popular app Discord has allowed online communities to thrive and how my favorite app, Notion, is making note taking and project tracking easier for students and businesses.
The final paper for EDP 5216, Theories of Learning, was for students to reflect on their knowledge and personal preferences in teaching styles. As I've stated before, I strongly believe in experiential learning. However, through this assignment, and even this course, I learned just how important it is for instructors to adapt their teaching style to fit the needs of the students and content. No one teaching strategy can be appropriate for all subject matters. Above all, we must adapt to meet the needs of our students.
For EME 6415, Development of Courseware, I created a simple PowerPoint quiz game based off of the popular television gameshow, Jeopardy. This game can be played in teams or by individuals. It follows the rules of the gameshow in that contestants can pick a category, followed by the amount. First person to raise their hand in this scenario is allowed to answer. We were able to pick our content of choice, and being a lifelong aviation geek, I chose to base this quiz on popular aircraft from around the world.
This quick guide was created for my internship for the Colligate School at FSU. I've been tasked with creating both guides and instructional videos on various tasks teachers will perform in Canvas to build out their courses. This includes exporting their content, applying themes, linking testing tools, and more.
Through an internship with The Collegiate School, I have two deliverables for my internship. The first, and main focus of the experience, is assisting in implementing the curriculum in Canvas software. The second is creating an outline for an online leadership class that will be offered to the students.
The Collegiate School is in its first year of operation. Teachers began using Canvas at the beginning of this year with very little training on how to use the tool effectively. To better prepare them for the second year, I have been working with the team to design a better experience for teachers. This includes integrating other tools within Canvas, such as Albert.io (an online test prep tool), and creating a course template that can be used by all teachers to give students consistent looking courses. I have helped coordinate meetings with FSU's Canvas team as well created guides to be used by teachers and staff on Canvas best practices. As of March 15, 2024, we have surveyed teachers as to what tools they would most like to have and what features are needed in a course. We then outlined what major items to include on a course template and will create it so that teachers can simply input content without having to design the entire course structure.
The online leadership class development deliverable included creating a 10th grade focused leadership class. This class will take advantage of the various leadership opportunities that can be made available through the schools relationship with Florida State University. My course curriculum includes Q&A sessions with school faculty and community leaders. The course also includes a community service project that students will complete in their first semester. We have also decided to create portfolios that students will present at the end of the entire class. This project has also allowed me to get more familiar with relating state standards to individual lessons and course organization.
