POLS 3312: Arguments, Data, and Politics (Undergraduate)

The goal of this course is to give students the tools to read, understand, scrutinize, and conduct political science research. It will focus primarily on the fundamental principles of research design. Topics will include: (1) formulating research questions and testable hypotheses; (2) identifying ways to measure key concepts as data; (3) understanding common methods in political science research including surveys, experiments, and panel studies; (4) identifying the strengths and weaknesses of these research designs; and (5) the logic of causal inference.
POLS 6365: Seminar in Public Opinion (Graduate)
Semesters Taught: Spring 2026.
The aims of this graduate seminar are two-fold. First, this seminar will introduce students to foundational theories, classic findings, and contemporary debates in the study of American public opinion. Second, the seminar will involve a class-wide project exploring an ongoing development in American public opinion–the recent reversal in Republicans' trend toward greater support for gay marriage–with the goal of publishing a co-authored journal article.
POLS 6380: Research Design and Quantitative Methods I (Graduate)

The aims of this course are (1) to prepare graduate students for conducting quantitative, empirical research by introducing the statistical methods most commonly used in the social and behavioral sciences, and (2) to guide graduate students in a prominent statistical computing program, R.
