Snowmobiling in the mountains has always had elements of risk but these risks are increasing by the year. This is because snowmobile technology continues to advance so that backcountry sledders can access areas you could only dream of a mere decade ago. The hills we climb and the ridges we traverse in minutes time were the same features that people would spend an entire day on previously... now we cross over that stuff in a few minutes in order to get to the big features old sledders haven't ever had the opportunity to see, let alone ride. Coupled with this increasing accessibility is global warming, which is changing the composition of mountain snow, leading to much more unpredictable snow conditions, which leads to more human-triggered avalanches and unfortunate loss of life.
This is where the Trek Check comes in. My future mobility app aims to educate people who go into the backcountry, in real time.
The Trek Check is an AR system integrated into your goggles an will provide overlays of any dangerous terrain you may be looking at.
Trek Check will constantly scan the terrain you are trekking through, taking into account windspeed, temperature, hoarefrost, cornices, etc.
Trek Check will also indicate when you are heading into a terrain trap. This is important because many people who get buried in avalanches did not trigger it themselves, and in fact may be quite some distance away. This happens because they are in a terrain trap which means there is no way to get out of the path of the avalanche, and the area is right were the avalanche is headed - an example of this would be snowmobiling through a creek bed or a small valley (which is done to get into bowls, slopes, and features further into the backcountry). Sometimes you have little choice but to go through a terrain trap, so Trek Check will make you aware of when you enter an exit these zones.
Trek Check will only activate when you are looking at things / in areas where there is some form of potential Avalanche danger. It is important that the AR overlay is not too obtrusive of people will not use it.
This image is an example of the AR overlay you would see through your goggles, though this is a prototype and the final product would be more informative, and less obtrusive.
