When someone decides that they want to start exploring the backcountry of Northwestern Canada it is imperative that they take at least one avalanche safety course. These courses can be taken in multiple regions, and generally include a classroom portion and a field portion where students are taken into avalanche terrain to use and test their knowledge in simulated activities.
One thing I have noticed with all the people I ride into the backcountry with is that everyone has a different threshold on what terrain they consider "too dangerous to ride", even though we all took the same courses. This is because avalanche safety is subjective, and incredibly hard to accurately predict. What if there was an app that Avalanche Safety educators could utilize in the field portion of the training?
This is where Terrain Check comes in: my app utilizes mobile and AR technology to create a learning platform where students in Avalanche Safety School can learn how to make judgement calls with immediate feedback on their decisions.
Avalanche Canada has a comprehensive and progressive Avalanche curriculum which caters to backcountry enthusiasts of all skill levels. It is this standardized curriculum that Terrain Check will work in accordance with.
This short video explains why the AST-1 curriculum is so important:
