This massive camphor (okusu) tree in Saga Prefecture on Kyushu island, Japan, is notable for its wide, spreading canopy and aromatic wood.
It grows within the grounds of a Shinto shrine, and is viewed as a symbol of longevity and good health. In Japan, it is believed that "God" dwells in the universe for a very long time, and ancient people prayed and gave thanks to huge trees and rocks. (takeo-jinjya.jp)
This is the sixth largest tree in all of Japan, and a natural monument of Takeo city since 1970.
