Date/Time: October 25, 3:00–4:30 PM ET, Click Here to Register
Note, registration is free for employees of TRB sponsors as well as Titanium and Cobalt Global Affiliates. The registration rate for all other attendees is $100.
Description: Cloud computing is changing how agencies plan, procure, implement, operate, and maintain solutions and services for TSMO. Agencies are rethinking the need to acquire and manage licensed software and provide hands-on support for application deployment, operations, and maintenance. Industry and academia are developing new cloud-hosted and cloud-based tools including freeway and arterial advanced traffic management systems (ATMS), automated traffic signal performance measures (ATSPM), traffic incident forecasting and prediction systems, ramp metering systems, video analytics tools, decision support systems, and performance monitoring/business intelligence tools. The focus of this webinar is to educate participants regarding the critical topics related to Cloud Computing including procurement, migration strategy, security, and new analytics and services.
Webinar presenters:
Integrated corridor management and border crossing using cloud services – Athena Hutchins, Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition
Multi-cloud advanced traffic management system migration with video and ATIS integration – Bob Fifer, Colorado Department of Transportation
Cybersecurity considerations for transitioning systems to the cloud – Ed Fok, Federal Highway Administration
Question and answer session moderated by Vaishali Shah, AEM Corporation. The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
Identify challenges, opportunities, and drivers to transition components of their traffic management system(s) to cloud services.
Identify different commercial cloud service providers and practitioners’ experiences with each.
Understand new capabilities and analytics that are possible through cloud services.

The Freeway Operations Committee won TRB’s 2023 Blue Ribbon Award for Diversity. In recognition of that award, TR News (March-April 2023) features the committee, highlighting the efforts we have taken to increase the diversity of committee membership and friends, especially from groups that are historically underrepresented in transportation research and practice. Thanks go out to outgoing Section Chair, Robert Bertini, for accepting the award on my behalf during the 2023 Annual Meeting. I was unable to attend the All Chairs Meeting due to another commitment.
Thanks to all of our committee members, friends, and volunteers for your commitment to increasing the diversity and inclusion of our committee and for helping ensure that we listen to all voices as we work to achieve our mission of promoting, implementing, operating, and maintaining traffic management systems and strategies to enhance the efficiency, safety, and environmental conditions on freeways and in freeway corridors.
The ISFO 2023 Final Program gives you a detailed look at sessions, workshops, speakers and moderators at this year's TRB ISFO. Find out what to expect at this international event! Updates will be published weekly.
Participants of the TRB ISFO 2023 can additionally register for a Networking Dinner which will take place at "Luftburg" - a traditional Austrian restaurant in the world's oldest amusement park "Wiener Prater".
This year's ASECAP Forum is embedded into ISFO 2023 and will take place on June 29, 2023. Don't miss the chance to learn more about the freeway operator's view, plans and vision for a sustainable road transport infrastructure including the deployment of alternative fuel infrastructure aligned with the political goals to reach carbon-free mobility. Separate registration needed.

It is with heavy hearts that the Committee announces the passing of one of our active former member and friend, Joel Marcuson. Joel Marcuson, formerly a member of WDCSITE and employee for the City of Alexandria, passed away on July 2nd, 2022 at the age of 74. A memorial service was held in his honor on October 8th in Stillwater, Minnesota. The members and friends of TRB Standing Committee ACP20 offer their condolences to all of Joel's family and friends. His energy and passion for our profession along with his friendly face, smile, and hearty handshake will be missed by many of us.

Click the link below to see a news report on the wrong way driving detection system in operation in Orlando, Florida. To date, this system has prevented over 1000 wrong way drivers from crashing on the mainline (results are proved with documented videos of every wrong way driver self-correcting and turning around without even law enforcement intervention or dispatch). One other benefit of this system is that it reduced the 911 calls regarding WWDs by 66% which relieves law enforcement.
Anyone wanting to find out more about the system can contact Haitham Al-Deek at Haitham at Haitham.Al-Deek@ucf.edu.

Committee members and friends are invited to an FHWA Listening session on Improving the Coordination of Information Technology (IT) and Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO). The purpose of this listening session is to:
(1) share experiences and past successes with connecting IT and TSMO,
(2) brainstorm areas where the two domains will need to coordinate in the future, and
(3) identify suggestions on research areas and resources that FHWA or other organizations can take to share effective practices and provide support to strengthen IT-TSMO relationships.
This listening session is part of an FHWA project that identified common IT-related challenges that TSMO staff have faced and the effective practices that organizations have used to address those practices. A reference document and series of fact sheets have been developed and will be available later this year.
DATE: Tuesday, June 8, 2021
TIME: 12:00 PM - 3:30 PM CDT

As discussed during our Spring Teleconference, we are beginning to plan our workshops for submission for the 2022 Annual Meeting. Currently, we are working on workshops on two topics:
Connected Mobility Innovations and Strategies for the Advancement of Transportation System Management and Operations (ACP20 Led) - Coordinated by Jeff Adler (Jeff.Adler@kapsch.net)
Next Generation Traffic Management Systems (ACP20 Support) - Coordinated by Jon Obenberger (Jon.Obenberger@dot.gov)
If you are interested in helping with these workhops, reach out to either of the coordinators and they will include you in the planning efforts. Thank you for your willingness to support our Committee's activities. Please let me know if you have any questions.
The National Operations Center of Excellence is offering a webinar on Managing Traffic Management Systems (TMS) Assets and Resources which will take place on May 6, 2021, 11:00am to 1:00pm ET. This webinar will provide participants with an appreciation of the practices, available resources, or key issues to consider in support of integrating the inventory and condition of assets and key resources into the planning, management, and operation of TMSs. Presentations will provide the context for TMS assets and resources, asset inventory development and management, asset monitoring and assessing, and asset condition reporting. Presenters will frame each of these topics, an initial list of issues to consider, and resources available to assist with developing and maintaining an inventory, monitoring and assessing, or reporting on the condition of TMS assets.

NOCoE has posted the recording of a webinar on the Decision Process for Dynamic Operation of Part-time Shoulder Use. This webinar provides valuable information for agencies considering this ATM operational strategy. Part-time shoulder use is a strategy that is increasingly being considered to provide additional roadway capacity when it is needed and preserving the benefits of a full-width shoulder for most hours of the day. This webinar provided an overview of part-time shoulder use and the range of implementations to date. The webinar also featured new FHWA research on practices for determining when to open and close a shoulder to traffic, particularly on dynamic facilities where the hours of operation vary in response to traffic conditions. Two agencies presented on recent dynamic part-time shoulder use installations as well. You can review the webinar recording here.
FHWA recently released Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) in Smart Connected Communities, which illustrates the implications of smart, connected communities for TSMO and to identify, through examples, what it means to manage and operate the transportation system in a smart, connected community. The primer explains TSMO and provides several examples of what TSMO might look like in a smart, connected community. The primer concludes with guidance for TSMO leaders who want to become more fully engaged in establishing and realizing the vision for a smart, connected community.
