This call seeks best practices in successfully communicating with John and Jane Q. Public about New and Emerging Transportation Technologies .

We’re living in an unprecedented time when mobility is being transformed and significantly reshaping how people and goods move from point A to point B. Whether

through automated vehicles being driven on our roadways; micromobility options, such as bikeshare and electric scooters; fleet electrification and drone delivery;

innovative intersections and streetscapes, or new app-based mobility service and operating models - there is always something new or non-traditional for

transportation providers to communicate and promote to the public in everyday, easily understandable, non-technical terms.

  • How have transportation providers or planners prepared to communicate new and emerging transportation technologies to the public?

  • What existing communications plans or techniques have been put into place to successfully communicate transportation innovations?

  • What lessons have been learned about communicating with transportation users as these new and non-traditional technologies are rolled out into our traditional transportation network?

  • What measures were used to determine if the communications efforts were successful?

To answer these types of questions, the Transportation Research Board’s Committee on Public Engagement and Communications established the John and Jane Q. Public Competition in 2007 to seek and share best practices and innovative approaches in communicating complex transportation information to the public.

Who qualifies?

Competition entries can include, but are not limited to: multi-media communications campaigns, websites, graphics, illustrations, social media strategies, studies, publications, photos, videos, software, interactive exercises and presentations. Most importantly, this call is looking for how the results are delivered in “kitchen-table” terms that John and Jane Q. Public can understand.

Who can submit an entry?

  • Easy to understand by John and Jane Q. Public.

  • Achievement of the communications goals or targets that were established for the project.

  • Increases understanding of concepts related to the competition theme.

  • Data is provided that demonstrates that the project was successful.

How will the winning entries be showcased?

The winning entries, which are judged and selected by a panel of transportation and communications professionals, will be featured at the TRB 101st Annual Meeting (January 9-13, 2022). Winning entries also will be featured in an edition of TRB’s transportation research news magazine, TRNews.
