My why...
It was after my trip with Presidential Classroom during my senior year in high school, that I felt certain that I was ready to go to college away from home. Going with a group of teenagers to Washington D.C. gave me the extra push that I needed to know that everything would be ok in college, that I was ready. Being on my own with other teenagers and my counselors was life changing! Two years later, already in college, I went back to Washington DC to do an internship in Congress.
In college, it was all about experiencing other cultures for me. I was president of the International Students Association, hosted and co-produced the radio show “Around the World in 60 Minutes (aired weekly for 4 years), founded the International Business Organization. Most importantly, it seemed like I just had friends everywhere in the world! I had learned so much about the intricacies of relating with people from other cultures, I ended up majoring in International Communications!
After that trip to Washington DC, I ended up traveling to many places, intrigued by their cultures and their environment. I have lived in Puerto Rico, Indiana, London, Seattle and Texas and have visited over 30 states, Morocco, France, Germany, Martinique, Canada, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Spain, England and Nicaragua. Right after college, I worked in London, England in charge of Eurostar Sales for the largest travel agency specialized in student travel and shortly after that in Seattle. While working in what used to be one of the largest US hostels, I helped organized the city's first International Budget Travel Expo where we featured several nationally renowned travel leaders such as Rudy Maxa and Rick Steves.
Of course, as a mom, I wanted my children to learn how to travel independently, so in 2015 we waved my husband goodbye at the Amtrak station in downtown Austin, as my kids and I embarked on a 30 day trip by train around the USA, after which we wrote the book “Amtrak’s Best Kept Secret”. They were only 9 and 11 years old and they had to pack and carry their own bags throughout the entire month! We got to be and see so much! What an experience!
The following year, as part of Masters program, I went with a group of other grad students to Spain. Again, I experienced first hand how incredible it can be to travel and learn with my professor and a group of peers. Even though I did not know anyone before I went, travel brought us together and I still stay in touch with some of the friends I met on this trip.
Last summer, I decided it was my turn to take some students abroad! During the 2021-2022 school year, I volunteered to take a group of students to Spain in the summer of 2022. I loved seeing them experience a completely different country, use their Spanish and just have a great time with their fellow travelers. I'll never forget how excited they were to see so many new things, how amazed they were at the buildings, the foods, the people, the accents.... they were taking everything in, in their own way, as teenagers.
In all, education, travel and cultures are my life long passions! They have been an integral part of who I am and it all started when I was still in school. I look forward to introducing another group teens to the marvels and intrecacies of travel!
