1866: Annie A. Jakes vs. Baltimore City Passenger Railway
Jakes, a Black woman, was thrown off a Baltimore City Passenger Railway car. It is unknown why, though race is implied. Jakes sued for assault, and conductor Francis Lawn was arrested.
This article was reported on in the Baltimore Sun, and continues the trend of portraying Black passengers in a positive, orderly light. While nothing is known about Annie Jakes, her husband Henry is called a "well-known colored barber and waiter of the city."
In Precursors to Rosa Parks, David Bogen explains that the case was not further reported on. See pg. 729 for more information.
