Section VI: "Chicken stance" type of postures
Explanation:
Use the chicken stance with various kinds of postures for which the chicken stance type is suitable. Base the decision to use this type of stance on the primary application that is desired, using the following pictures and descriptions as a guide.
(1) Chicken stance with scooping and piercing palm
1. Action:
(a) Right chicken stance with scooping and piercing palm:
Keep the right foot motionless with the toes turned outward approximately 30 degrees, [and shift the weight onto the right foot] to stand the body's weight on one foot. Lift the left foot and lean it against the inside of the right foot, bending the knee of the right leg. Store up energy in the standing hip joint [kua], maintaining the center of gravity in the center of the right foot. Move both hands in front of the chest, and then scoop and stab the left palm forward, allowing the left shoulder to go forward. The right palm is behind [the left palm], with the [left] shoulder matching [ with a corresponding backward movement]. Both hands are Yin palms at shoulder level height, with the eyes looking at the left palm, as shown in Figure (54).
(b) When doing left chicken stance with scooping and piercing palm, it is the same as in part (a), only with left and right reversed.
2. Use or Application:
If the opponent comes in with a strike from the front, I first use one palm to raise and strike the opponent's hand. At the same time, I use the other palm to scoop downward and pierce at the opponent. Use this [posture] to gather and store up energy in preparation for a movement such as throwing a strike.
3. Essential points:
Crown of the head pushing upward. Hollow the chest and tighten the back. Sink the shoulders and drop the elbows. Sink the waist jìng downward, and sink the Qi to the dan-tian while concentrating on both palms. Buckle the knees, and round between the thighs. Scooping and piercing must happen in coordination with the waist turning.
[Note: Thinking about the Xingyi Chicken form, it seems like the intent of the front hand is to lift an incoming strike, and then the body moves forward to strike with the other hand. In other words, the front hand does not draw back, but instead that hand just lifts and the rest of the body moves forward.]

(2) Empty stance with double drilling fist
1. Action:
(a) Right chicken stance with double drilling fists:
Move into an empty stance using the same method as in posture (1). Standing solely on the right foot, move both fists in front of the chest, and then drill both fists up, with the left fist at eye level and the left shoulder forward approximately 45 degrees. The left upper arm is at shoulder level height and the right fist supports at the inside of the elbow pit of the left arm. Wrap the right elbow in front of the chest, with the centers of both fists facing the rear and [centered] on a line beneath the nose. Look at the left fist, finishing the posture as in Figure (55).
(b) When doing left chicken stance with double drilling fists, it is the same as in part (a), only with left and right reversed.
2. Use or Application:
If the opponent comes in with a strike from the front, I use both fists to drill up in front of the chest and lift up the opponent's hands. This posture is preparation for stepping up and striking the opponent with a splitting hit.
3. Essential points:
Drilling up with both fists and storing [energy in the standing] hip joint [kua] must happen in coordination with each other, with the rest of the essential points the same as in the previous posture's item 3.

(3) Chicken stance with smashing fist strike

Both hands use standing fists that are joined together on top of the left knee. Look at the ground, finishing the posture as in Figure (56).
(b) When doing left chicken stance with smashing fist strike, it is the same as in part (a), only with left and right reversed.

(4) Chicken stance with punch directed to groin
1. Action:
(a) Right chicken stance with right punch directed to groin:
Move into a chicken stance using the same method as in posture (1). Standing solely on the right foot, use the left hand to smash downward in front of the chest using a standing fist and guard in front of the abdomen. Punch the right fist downward over the left fist to strike with a standing fist that is [centered] on a line beneath the bridge of the nose and at the same height as the left fist. Look at the right fist, finishing the posture as in Figure (57).
(b) When doing left chicken stance with left punch directed to groin, it is the same as in part (a), only with left and right reversed.
2. Use or Application:
If the opponent comes in with a strike from the front and they are extremely close, I use one fist to guard against the opponent's hand or foot. I use the other fist to punch the opponent's lower body and perhaps advance forward as I strike.
3. Essential points:
The same as in the previous posture's [item 3].
[Note: This posture is used at the beginning of Xingyi Hawk, except in Hawk the lower fist is Yin not standing. It is also at the beginning of the Xingyi Bashi form.]
