Section VI: "Empty stance" type of postures
Explanation:
Use the empty stance with various kinds of postures for which the empty stance type is suitable. Base the decision to use this type of stance on the primary application that is desired, using the following pictures and descriptions as a guide.
[Note: The "empty stance" (xu-bu) in this section is literally translated as "empty-full stance" (xushi-bu), because the front foot is empty and the back foot is completely full. However, it will be referred to simply as "empty stance" in the following text.]
(1) Empty stance with single piercing fist
1. Action:
(a) Right empty stance with left piercing fist:
From the "attention posture" [with heels together], keep the left foot still in its original position, and send the right foot to the front with a half step. The front toes are touching the ground, with the heel lifted and empty, while the back foot is turned out approximately 30 degrees. Sit solidly on the rear leg, and bend it slightly. Keeping the center of gravity on the rear foot, withdraw the right hand as a Yang fist to the side of the right waist. Grasp the left hand into a fist, lifting it up and flipping it over. Then pass it by the side of the left ear and strike forward with a piercing fist, ending with the tiger's mouth facing downward at shoulder level height. Allow the left shoulder to go forward, and look at the left fist, finishing the posture as in Figure (49).
(b) When doing left empty stance with right piercing fist, it is the same as in part (a), only with left and right reversed.
2. Use or Application:
If the opponent comes in with a strike from the front, I use one hand to pluck [yank] the opponent's hand and draw them closer to my body. I use the other fist to make a piercing strike to the opponent's upper body section.
3. Essential points:
Crown of the head pushing upward. Sink the shoulders and drop the elbows. Hollow the chest and tighten the back. Buckle the knees, and round between the thighs. Sink the waist jìng downward, and sink the Qi to the dan-tian when using the reversed piercing fist. Use the strength of waist's twist to send power out through the reversed piercing fist. It is important to drop the shoulder down.
[Note: This description is almost identical to the Taijiquan posture 47 "Hit with Left Reverse Fist".]

When grabbing and pulling them to the lower right side of the body, turn the body to the right approximately 45 degrees. Sink the right shoulder down, and close the left shoulder forward. Look at the right fist, finishing the posture as in Figure (50).
(b) When doing left empty stance with double grabbing palms, it is the same as in part (a), only with left and right reversed.
2. Use or Application:
