Transition Howard County is part of the international Transition movement that is focused on making communities more sustainable. Learn more about Transition Howard County, how to get involved and the Repair Café !
Transition Howard County partners with the Community Ecology Institute (CEI). We are actively involved in the development of CEI’s Maker Space at Freetown Farm in Columbia, MD. The Maker Space is home to our Repair Cafés as well as workshops on different Transition reskilling topics including tool sharpening, sewing, and other basic repair skills. The Maker Space provides opportunities to learn how to make things such as Adirondack chairs and kumiko screens.
The Maker Space supports our local Garden to Garment, Textile Garden activities. Transition Howard County is working in partnership with the Chesapeake Fibershed to revitalize our regional network of textile producers, processors and enthusiasts. With CEI and UMD Extension Howard County Master Gardeners, we are growing and teaching how to grow sustainable plant fibers (flax for linen, dogbane, nettle, and cotton) at Freetown Farm. In the Maker Space we build the tools needed for processing flax and other textile activities. In partnership with the Chesapeake Region Lace Guild, we are teaching people how to spin the fibers into thread and use the thread to make beautiful lace.
We recognize that we cannot create a truly different outer world without making changes to our inner landscape. Transition Howard County has Inner Transition events that focus on the inner dimensions of the work we are doing. We host in person and online book discussions on books by authors such as Thich Nhat Hanh, Michael Singer, Byron Katie, and Charles Eisenstein. Inner Transition focuses on interbeing, the interconnectedness among ourselves, others and the natural world.
