As outlined through theory, the transition to practice is a potentially difficult transition for some new graduate nurses. Challenges that may arise include:
Many new graduate nurses leave their profession due to stress, lack of support from their organization, poor interdisciplinary relationships, unreasonable workloads, uncivil work environments, and difficulty transitioning into practice(Clark & Springer, 2012).
Preceptors find new graduate nurses do not always possess critical thinking skills, time management, assessment skills, as well as many other qualities that are crucial for patient care (Reebals et al., 2021).
A lack of interprofessional learning opportunities and perceived high expectations and lack of support are barriers to transition to practice (Reebals et al., 2021).
There are many challenges within nursing school education that do not allow students to gain a full understanding of the full role of a professional nurse including high student-to-faculty ratios, lack of clinical sites, and only caring for one stable patient(Powers et al., 2019).
