South Texas Transgender

Photovoice Project

As members of the LGBT+ community, we continue to face prejudice and discrimination that affects our quality of life. However, most research on "LGBT+" experiences focuses on cisgender gay men from large, liberal cities. Far less attention is paid to transgender and nonbinary people living in less-populated, more conservative regions in the U.S.

The goal of this project is to provide a voice to transgender and nonbinary (trans) people living in a culturally conservative region. We want to learn how trans people cope with and overcome prejudice and discrimination in South Texas. While we are interested in learning about the problems and challenges you’ve faced as trans person in South Texas, we’re equally interested in learning about your successes and strengths!

Working together, we will use your stories and experiences to develop educational programming to increase the overall acceptance of trans people in South Texas, and to encourage policy makers and community stakeholders to make our workforce and our health care system more inclusive for trans individuals.
