You can use your phone or digital camera to take the photos. If you have neither, please let us know and we will provide you a disposable camera to take your photographs.
Be creative! There’s no right or wrong image to capture. This is your story. You’ll tell the stories behind the photos you take, so don’t worry about the photos being literal. Photograph things that express the feeling/message you want to convey.
For this project, we encourage you to take new photos rather than use old photos you've already taken. Taking time to think about the experiences you want to share and capturing images that showcase those experiences in the present moment is an important part of the photovoice process.
For privacy reasons, please don’t take photographs of people. If there is a certain person or group that is important to your story, think of an object or symbol that represents that person and take a photo of that, instead.
Do not photograph anything or anyone that could put you at risk of being harmed or negatively treated. If you need guidance on how to most safely photograph something, please contact a member of the study team.
You can take as many photos as you’d like, but once you’ve finished taking your photos, select 5 that you feel most strongly represent your ideas, thoughts, and experiences.
Once you’ve chosen your 5 photos, you will email them to Bailey Otter at botter@islander.tamucc.edu. If you prefer, you can also send an email to request a phone number so you can text the photos to a member of our research team, instead.
When we receive your photos, we will contact you to schedule an individual interview via Zoom. During this interview, we will look at your photographs together and ask you to explain the meaning behind each of your photographs.
