Assignment and rubric ideas to use with students to encourage personal motivation and appropriate use of AI.

Purpose Planner 

The Purpose Planner is being developed to supplement Methodist University’s “Life on Purpose” general education curriculum, and draws heavily from the Council of Independent Colleges’ Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE). Vocational inquiry, understood as an activity that fulfills a student while meeting a community need, pushes education from “completing requirements,” which incentivizes AI usage, to “growth process,” which requires hard work and failure. 

Scaffolded AI Research Assignment

This series of assignments introduces students to generative AI, illustrates how it can be used to summarize sources, but also requires critical appraisal of AI output. 

Common Gen Ed Rubric for Writing and Critical Thinking

This rubric was used by Methodist University from 2014-2020 to assess the writing sophistication of senior-level work. It demonstrates one possible way to systematize the skills undermined by overreliance on generative AI.
