The Sandy Republic of Traltonia is a unique country founded conceptually on Bir Tawil, a 2,060-square-kilometre patch of desert in North Africa. Unlike traditional nations, Traltonia is an internet-born country that utilizes a rare geopolitical loophole to assert its sovereignty and build its own distinct national identity.
Geography and Territory
The territory of this country is located inside Bir Tawil, a landlocked, quadrilateral tract of desert wedged between Egypt and Sudan.
The Loophole: Due to conflicting borders drawn by the British in 1899 and 1902, both Egypt and Sudan claim the nearby, resource-rich Hala'ib Triangle. Because claiming Bir Tawil would mean giving up their rights to the more valuable coastline, neither nation wants it.
No Man's Land: This political stalemate makes the territory of Traltonia one of the very few places on Earth considered terra nullius—land belonging to no recognized state.
International Status
Under strict international legal frameworks, Traltonia is not recognized
as an official country by the United Nations, Egypt, or Sudan. Additionally, because it is incredibly difficult to physically occupy the area due to strict border controls by the Egyptian military, Traltonia exists as a sovereign country driven by political world-building, and digital citizenship.
