OTA 1120 - Modalities Lecture
Course Description
Students study manual wheelchair parts/use/design/fit, ADL and IADL techniques & adapted devices; activity analysis; architectural accessibility and universal design; ergonomics; static splints/hand assessments, workplace design, and patient cognitive levels. Designated as a Community-Engaged Learning course.
The course helps students develop a familiarity with wheelchair usage and various
types of adaptive equipment/appliances; use of an industrial sewing machine to fabricate
patient supplies/splints; role-playing and teaching strategies, techniques for treatment
in activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living; functional transfers, and cognitive assessment.
Business ADA Accessibility Compliance
Assignment Description
Students will work in groups to assess the accessibility of a local business using knowledge of Title III ADA guidelines. This is a service-learning assignment.
Student Objectives:
Assess a local business using knowledge of ADA accessibility requirements (for all disabilities not just wheelchair users)
Calculate measurements and compliance of requirements
Demonstrate professional demeanor and communication skills in dealing with a business
Directions: (In groups of 4 students)
Identify a local community business to assess. Identify instructor by no later than September 30th.
Contact business and get approval from owner/manager prior to start
By phone call, in person discussion, or email; explain that you are OTA students learning about ADA and business access for individuals with disabilities. Explain that you would like to perform a simple evaluation of the business for a class assignment.
Visit the business during off peak hours
Assess the business using the Accessibility Assessment Form
to record your findings
Write a letter to the manager with the outcomes of your assessment in positive and supportive language. Letter should include areas of strengths and areas of suggested improvements related to ADA compliance and accessibility. An example letter can be found here: Sample Letter
Participate in an in-class presentation reflecting on your experience.
Submit letter to instructor (by email) for feedback prior to sending or discussing with the business.
Provide the business owner/manager with a copy of your letter or send the letter via email.
Upload the final draft of your letter to Canvas (after the instructor approves the rough draft).
Participate in an in-class presentation reflecting on your experience.
Save a copy of the report, letter, and a photo for your e-portfolio.
You will turn in as a group, the final letter, the accessibility assessment form, and a photo of the group doing the assessment.
