Nutrition is very important for any animal, mice included. While commercial mouse feed look fun and colorful is it healthy for your mice? Most mouse feed you buy from pet stores don't actually carry everything that a mouse needs in their diet. These include the 6 basic nutrients, water, proteins, minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates and fats. A diet without any of these can cause malnutrition, severe health issues, and even death.
Toxedali's Mousery's Homemade Mouse Ration:
Oats: oats are high in fiber, good for digestion, and help with cardiovascular health
Barley: barley improves metabolism, provides vitamins, regulates blood sugar levels, lowers cholesterol, reduces body weight, and improves insulin sensitivity
Almonds: almonds carry plenty of healthy fats and proteins, it's also an antioxidant
Cheerios: cheerios have carbohydrates that are healthy for mice
Dried mealworms: dried mealworms provides a lot of protein, essential nutrients, and supports muscle maintenance
Dog food: dog food provides fat and nutrients
Flax seeds: flax seeds reduce inflammation, protects the lungs, and improve the liver
Noodles: noodles file their teeth down and provides essential carbohydrates
Macadamia nuts: macadamia nuts prevent obesity, lowers blood lipid levels, and reduce inflammation
Split-peas: split-peas provide essential nutrients, plant-based protein, and dietary fiber
While all of these foods are important, you have to be careful of how much and how often you are feeding your mice. On average, 1 mouse should be eating 1 tablespoon of food per day. We also give our mice hay and fresh fruits/veggetables weekly to help with their mineral intake.
