EXPERIENCE SOUTHERN LEYTE
Southern Leyte is a blessed and bountiful province in the Philippines located in the Eastern Visayas region with eighteen (18) municipalities and one (1) city. Maasin City is the capital of the province. Southern Leyte was once a sub-province of Leyte before it was divided from the latter. Limasawa, an island to the south is part of the province where the First Easter Sunday Mass was held and initiated by Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan, and this year celebrates the Quincentennial Commemorations, as it marks its 500 years Anniversary of the First Easter Sunday Mass in the Far East.
Southern Leyte is a lady that’s pretty and wonderful yet adventurous. Dive into the pristine, cerulean waters of Sogod Bay and see the beauty of its depths in Napantao Marine Sanctuary, one of the most biologically diverse reefs in the Philippines. The Sun-ok dive site in Pintuyan is also an unspoiled dive sites feature beautifully steep drop-offs, majestic reefs that are teeming with life. Jump into the deep blues and play with the whalesharks affectionally called “TIKI-TIKI” by the locals. Bask in the colors of the ocean and feel the serenity all around you in the historic Limasawa Island. Go spelunking in Cambaro Caves and explore the mangroves of Sta.Cruz, Molopolo in Macrohon and rendezvous with Black Tipped sharks and the rare Philippine Wild Ducks. Be amazed with the wave adventure and try surfing in Silago which is known to be the Surfing capital of Southern Leyte. Play with the schools of fish that come nipping at your fingers, and be in awe of its majesty. After that lovely ocean adventure, walk around and discover uphill some of the best mountains’ forms in the province, the Mount Nacolod in Hinunangan that has the highest Mountain peak with an approximately 1000 meters above sea level. For the food lover; try the mouthwatering Banagan (lobsters) in Silago, the crispy Ampao in Pintuyan and the “bibingka” which is the delicacy in Maasin City. Learn also about the PINTADOS’ culture at the “BALANGHAI MASAU” pre-colonial museum and learn “BAYBAYIN” writing and Pintado tattoing.
