Glinda and Home

Sadly for you, this will be the last story I tell from Oz. Honestly, I would have been done when I told you about Lion if this story wasn't so important. You must know about Glinda the Good Witch and how she helped us get back to Kansas.

After travelling safely through the forest (not without a few bumps, I assure you), our crew came upon the castle of Glinda the Good Witch. Since we were all so dusty and smelly from our journey, we went to wash up before going into Glinda's presence. I was mostly clean because Dorothy holds me most of the time, so I just watched as she washed her face up. I got an unpleasant surprise, though, when some of the water splashed right on my head.

After we all smelled like peppermint soap, we entered into a magnificently large room where Glinda was waiting for us on her throne. Her throne was beautiful, large, and made of the shiniest ruby gems one could ever find. Gems must grow very large in Oz. I wanted to smell every inch of that beautiful floor, but Dorothy wanted me to stay with her. I think she may have been afraid, and maybe she thought that I could protect her if something was to happen.

I looked closely at Glinda's face to see if I could sense anything suspicious about her, but I came out at a loss. She was fair like Dorothy, and her eyes had the same crinkles due to smiles like Dorothy had. I couldn't tell myself, but I heard Scarecrow comment on how her hair was as red as the rubies on her throne. I could see that her eyes were as blue as the tide.

Glinda wasted no time. She asked Dorothy what she could do for her, for rarely does anyone venture all the way to her kingdom. Thankfully, Dorothy told her all about how we had ended up in Oz, and how she desperately wanted to get her and me back to Uncle Henry and Aunt Em in Kansas. I was hoping Glinda would send us back right at that moment, but she asked for a favor first. Glinda wanted the Golden Cap which calls the Flying Monkeys. You see, the flying monkeys had been at the hand of the evil witch that ruled the west and the Winkies (a frail people who did not like the witch). However, when Dorothy melted that witch with water, she gained control of the flying monkeys. If you say a certain sentence, the monkeys come and do whatever you ask of them. The magic of it is that they will only do your bidding three times. As we had used our very last use of the cap to get to Glinda's castle everyone seemed very on board with this request, so Dorothy gave it to Glinda. Glinda then asked everyone what they wanted to do once Dorothy had left. Scarecrow said he would gladly go back to lead the good people of the Emerald City. Tin Man mentioned that the Winkies would love to have him as their Lord in the west. Lion told her how the forest animals had made him their king. Then Glinda told them that she would send them back to the places they wished to be with the three uses of the Flying Monkeys.

Everyone thanked Glinda, but Dorothy still didn't know how to get us home. I growled low, just enough for Dorothy to feel, and this prompted Dorothy to ask about how to get us home. Guess what? Glinda said that the silver shoes Dorothy had gotten off of the wicked witch our house landed on would take us home. Imagine that! Only two or three steps on Dorothy's part while imagining where she wanted to go was all we needed all along.

Dorothy was so excited, so that made me extra excited. My tail must have been wagging a mile a minute. She kissed everyone, and I licked Glinda's leg in appreciation. Then, we were off. We landed in Kansas right outside of the property. Uncle Henry had built a new house to replace the one that was now in Oz.

Aunt Em welcomed us with open arms. I could tell how much she loves Dorothy by the relief I could hear in her voice. I jumped all around and rolled all in the wheat field. Then I realized something... the shoes. Dorothy had no silver shoes on her feet. They must have fallen off on the magical journey. Dorothy didn't seem to mind though. I'm sure if someone needed us back in Oz, they would find a way to get us.

This is the end of my tale of Oz. I hope you enjoyed it as much as anyone could enjoy a story from a dog. Oh, I have to go. Aunt Em and Uncle Henry went to pick up Emma (you know, the girl dog that I mentioned before my story), and they have come back! Wish me luck on a great first impression!

Author's Note: This is another part of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz that goes beyond what you have seen in the movie. This story starts from page 252 of the book. The team had just passed some creatures called Quadlings. I would describe these creatures as jack-in-the-boxes without boxes. They exercised their last use of the Flying Monkeys for this part of the journey. Then they came to Glinda. She is not to be mistaken for the white witch Dorothy and Toto met at the beginning of their journey in Oz. She was so kind to use all three of her uses of the Flying Monkeys to get the rest of the crew, Lion, Scarecrow, and Tin Man, back to where they belonged. Then, she set the Flying Monkeys free (they were actually very nice in the book). Aunt Em was so happy to see Dorothy again. However, yes, the silver shoes had fallen off of Dorothy's feet, so she couldn't go to Oz again by her own bidding. Toto alludes to the fact that someone from Oz may come to get Dorothy for her help in the future. To read more stories from Oz and how Dorothy gets there again, you can go here. I made up, Emma, the new female dog. She was a tactic I used to transition into and out of Toto's story. Again, this story is based off of the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum with illustrations by W. W. Denslow.
