For UA Faculty & Researchers

TOSA receives many inquires about who to contact and how to conduct research with the Tohono O'odham-- this page will help you navigate and plan accordingly.

If you are a graduate student, regents' professor, anthropologist, or ecologist currently or are planning to conduct research within the boundaries of the Tohono O'odham Nation or with/featuring Tohono O'odham tribal members you will absolutely need the approval of the Tohono O'odham Nation Institutional Review Board (TON IRB).

Want to understand what will be required/requested of your research study? Please read the Tohono O'odham Nation Research Code here:

TOSA is not a go between researchers and the TON IRB.

If you are an enrolled student or faculty member at The University of Arizona and would like to work with the Tohono O'odham Nation or any Native American tribe you must get approval from 1) the respective tribe 2) the tribe's IRB and 3) UA's Human Subjects and Institutional Review Board (IRB). For information about UA's IRB please check out the link below:

An Example of How to Conduct Research with a Federally Recognized Tribe of the United States

The following is a PDF made by the Arizona Cooperative Extension (2014). The document offers a step-by-step guide called the "Process to Conduct Research" that might be helpful to you or your colleagues seeking to conduct research with a federally recognized tribe. It also includes a directory of 21 of Arizona's 22 federally recognized tribes. The Pueblo of Zuni is not included in this list so we recommend visiting the Pueblo of Zuni website linked below.

TOSA members are not specialists in obtaining IRB approval so we highly recommend you contact the wonderful people at the UA HS and IRB Office and of course, the Tohono O'odham Nation Institutional Review Board.

TOSA does not assist with completing IRB forms. If you wish to solicit additional information, participants (e.g. Tohono O'odham to interview for your news article or academic publication), or wish to have TOSA give a presentation about aspects of our peoples' culture and heritage please send us an email. TOSA always forwards these solicitations to our listserv. We do not encourage our members to participate but we do forward these calls and often individual members will respond.
