Torquay Golf Club Junior Competitions
The Junior Section has been fortunate enough to have been recipients of donated trophies given by past members of the golf club. We have a number of trophies that are displayed in our trophy cabinet the oldest trophy is our Gillespie Trophy which was presented to the juniors in 1954 and the newest trophy is the Cornelius Trophy which was presented to the juniors in 2019. Below are a short description of each trophy and what the competition is
The Gillespie Trophy 1954
This trophy was presented to the juniors by members Mr and Mrs Gillespie in 1954. This is our knockout competition with the final played at Finals weekend. The competition is full handicap allowance knock out Matchplay. The Draw will be done in April
Junior Rosebowl 1988
This trophy was presented by John and Linda Churchwood when John was Captain of the golf club during that year. This competition is played on the first Sunday in May and awarded to the junior who scores the best nett score over 18 holes.
Torquay Junior Scratch Champion 2002
This trophy was presented by then Head Professional of Torquay Golf Club Martin Ruth. This competition is played at the height of the season and awarded to the junior who scores the lowest gross score over 18 holes
Junior Spring Challenge 2002 and Junior Summer League
In 2002 our junior section was flourishing with many members who not only played regularly but also had a competitive golf handicap. The Junior Section created two new competitions that were played in conjunction with another Junior Trophy event and awarded the novice juniors for who had not reached the target of a competitive handicap the chance and experience of playing for a trophy. The Novice players would play a stableford competition on a shorter course and fewer holes, whilst the other juniors played for the Junior Rosebowl and the Junior Scratch Champion respectively.
Betty Ladmore Trophy 2004 and the Megan Smith Novice Trophy 2004
Both Betty Ladmore and Megan Smith were popular lady members at Torquay; they were lifelong friends playing a game which they thoroughly enjoyed. Due to ill health Megan was first to retire from golf and gifted the Junior Section a trophy as she wanted to support the junior section at that time, sadly Megan Smith passed away on 6th May 2004. Betty also gifted a trophy and would attend the prize giving as both Megan and Betty recognised that the Junior Golf was the future. Betty passed away 7th March 2019 aged 92 years. These trophies are played on the same day with the Betty Lad more trophy going to the junior who scored the best nett score and the Megan Smith Trophy going to the junior who scored the best stableford score.
Torquay Junior Open Scratch Winner 2004
In 2004, Torquay golf club held its first junior open. At the time there was only one trophy now in its 17th year of hosting a Junior Open there are not only two trophies awarded but many prizes split into 3 divisions. The Junior Open often has juniors playing from more than 15 clubs with the attendance being in the range of 60 – 100 juniors playing our course. This trophy is awarded to the junior who scores the lowest gross score over 18 holes
Torquay Junior Open Best Nett Winner 2005
Following the successful launch of the first Junior Open in 2004 another trophy was presented to the junior who scored the best nett score over 18 holes. Although any junior can compete for both trophies there can only be one winner and the junior cannot win both the Scratch and the Nett Trophy.
Torquay Junior Centenary Cup 2009
As 2009 marked the centenary year of Torquay Golf Club a trophy was gifted by the club to celebrate this achievement.
Most Improved Golfer 2009
This trophy is given to the junior who achieves the highest handicap reduction within the golfing year.
Sportsman of the Year 2012
This trophy is awarded to the junior who may not necessarily won anything but has always tried their best sometimes through adversity. They have gone above and beyond in terms of helping and supporting their fellow juniors and the junior committee.
Junior Winter League 2018
As winter golf became more popular due to the improved manufacturing of warm waterproofs and the course being in a condition where you could play competitive golf in the winter; The Winter League Trophy was introduced and played in the same playing conditions of the Spring Challenge and Summer League.
Cornelius Trophy Order of Merit 2019
This is our newest trophy. Wendy Cornelius was a member of Torquay Golf Club who sadly died December 2018. It was her wish that a trophy was given to the Junior Section. As there are a number of trophies it was decided that this trophy would be an Order of Merit. Points are awarded to the juniors who attend all competitions including Junior South Devon League Competitions, Junior Opens and Devon Golf Order of Merit. Juniors are awarded points based on their result i.e. 10 points for 1st place 9 points for 2nd place and so on. The points are totalled up and the winner is announced at the end of the golfing year.
