I created this activity as a culminating project for calculus or calculus-based physics. It builds on concepts of differential calculus, so it is appropriate for either AP Calculus or foundations of calculus. I have done the mathematical portion with my UW Calculus 124 students. Since all schools take AP exams on the same date in early May, but west coast schools attend school through mid-June, there is a five to six week period after exams. A robotics project would be a great way to take advantage of this period and connect the students' learning to a fun application. This project utilizes the EXPLOR3R robot built from a Lego Mindstorms EV3 kit.
