The central idea of my sustained investigation is the delusion digital media creates. Oftentimes we tend to let our devices take advantage of our attachment to them, drowning in an endless stream of connectivity and losing the ability to concentrate. It makes us just keep wanting for more. Digital media become a spectacle; it is simply there to distract ourselves from what matters the most.

To most, breathing is simply innate. But for some, that is far from the reality. Having been diagnosed with asthma at a young age, breathing has been a constant struggle. Simply to live, to live a life more suffocating than me, I would’ve to exert myself just to take a breath. As such, my sustained investigation comprises pieces that not only reflect a physical form of suffocation, but also the emotional form constructed by societal standards.

My experiences coping with fixation on a multitude of triggers, I became interested in exploring the natures of people when they lose themselves to either a habit or drug of some kind. From medication to social media, there are wide range of dependencies. For instance, when I was in middle school, I used to consume lemon slices every day for a period of three years. But the negative emotions I felt when trying to stop myself really clashed with sensation when I consumed lemons. My artworks exist at this intersection.

This sustained investigation explores the dissection of a moment in time, a memory, or a story into different components. It explores the art of comics and graphic novels and their ability to tell a story using multiple panels. It investigates unification of different elements by cutting parts up into bite-sized pieces while maintaining a larger narrative. The intention of my work is to regale each viewer with a story.

How does our environment mold our perception of the world? How do I appreciate the beauty in normalcy? As I witness my country be ravaged by political upheaval on top of a viral pandemic from the confines of my living space, I have come to discover and find tranquility in the beauty of the things we so often take for granted. From my personal habits to my virtual learning experience, a bustling Chinese temple to a lone man in a teashop, my SI is a product of my personal experiences and mixed cultural identity and acts as an homage to the mundane happenstances and overlooked characters of life.
