October 2, 2007: A seventeen-year-old girl named Akina became a victim to a gruesome murder that happened on Yokai Street. After interviewing several eyewitnesses, that includes her best friend Yamako, a salesman, and a homeless man named Yoru, the Kyoto Police Department was able to trace her whereabouts. Akina and Yamako were practicing for a school play and did not realize it was getting dark. They walked home together but then Akina decided to split up because she had to stop by the grocery store. The salesman encountered Akina and saw her leaving the grocery store at 8:36 pm. Finally, the eyewitness account of Yoru revealed that he saw a woman approach Akina. The streetlights were dimmed so he could barely recognize the features of the woman. She had long, dark hair, dressed in a dark business attire and wore a surgical mask. They were chatting about something but it was inaudible to Yoru. Yoru then saw the woman remove her surgical mask and revealed her disfigured face. Yoru was terrified when he saw the woman's face and was about to leave the scene. Suddenly, Yoru saw Akina struggle and collapse on the ground with a pool of blood draining onto the cold concrete. Horrified by what he saw, Yoru ran to find help and by the time he came back, the woman was gone. The Kyoto Police Department ruled this incident as first-degree murder.
Autopsy Report: The victim was a 17 year old Japanese female. Upon EMS arrival, the victim was already dead from blood loss. At the time of examination, the body is clothed in a high school uniform. It consists of a black blouse, tie, blazer with school crest, and a skirt. Her face was slashed from cheek to cheek, and her teeth were visible from the laceration. The laceration was not made by one clean swipe and instead it was uneven. The sawing motion indicated that the weapon was dull, maybe rusty. It is possible that the weapon the suspect used was a pair of scissors, worn down through heavy usage. By the looks of it, there seemed to be a struggle against her assailant but no DNA evidence can be found in her hands and nails.
The killer of Akina disappeared without a trace. The case remains open just in case anyone finds evidence or is willing to give their eyewitness testimonies connecting to this case. Rumors started to spread that this woman was a serial killer who kills her victim by slitting their face similar to hers. Some people believed that her husband was abusive and caught her cheating. He cut up her face so that no one would be attracted to her again. This is due to the incident that happened a few years prior that lead to the husband's arrest. The wife disappeared after the incident without a trace. Other people believed that it was an accident during her visit at the dentist. To save money, she went to an unlicensed practitioner to fix her teeth. The practitioner was inexperienced and during the surgery, the equipment swiped the woman's face and left her disfigured. This stems from the incident that happened a year prior that led to the police arresting the man and shutting down his business. In both cases, the woman became insane and started to attack random people. Everyone knows her as Kuchisake-onna, or the Slit-Mouthed Woman.
Author's Note: This story is about Kuchisake-onna or the Slit-Mouthed Woman. I gave an in-depth explanation to her back story in the introduction. Kuchisake-onna was a woman who married to a samurai and was punished for cheating on him. Another version was that she had an accident during a dental procedure because one of the products smelled bad. The version I created was based on this but instead of the products smelling bad, I made the story that an unlicensed practitioner slashed her face by accident because I think it sounds better. I tried to keep her as much of a mystery as possible because knowing more about the villain makes them not as scary. That's why I did it through the eyewitness testimony through the homeless man Yoru. I did this story as a crime story because I want to try something new, and the next story about Teke-Teke and Nukekubi will have a different style to it. I tried to copy the autopsy diction as best as I can but there was too much information to cover that's irrelevant. I ended the story as a mystery to leave the feeling that the murderer is still out there, looking for her new prey.
