Due to the negative actions of humans, negative cursed energies can be released and take the form of humans or inhabit objects. Yurei is a broad term for spirits of the dead. If a person dies by violent means like murder or suicide without a proper burial, then their spirits will become dangerous. A vengeful spirit is called onryo and they are the most dreaded type of all the yurei. Onryo are the ghosts of people who died with strong passions - hatred, rage, jealousy, love - that they are unable to let go of the mortal planes. Instead, they seek vengeance on anyone who encounters them. Yokai are earthly creatures that can take animalistic forms (cat, fox, human) and inanimate objects like umbrella.
In Kyoto, Japan, there is a street called Ichijo-dori Street or Yokai Street. Ichijo-dori thrived by embracing the lore of spirits with festivals, events, food, and merchandise. It is meant to attract curious travelers and those who are interested in learning more about yokai or yurei. However, humans were not the only ones that Ichijo-dori Street attracted. There were many strange cases of murder and disappearance that happened in this street since it gained popularity in 2005. There were bodies reported with their mouth cut from one cheek to the other, bodies that got sliced in half, and bodies that were drained of blood.
Kuchisake-onna is an onryo or otherwise known as Slit-Mouthed Woman. There are variations of her origins and one version is that she slit her mouth during a dental procedure because one of the dental products smelled horrible. Another version is that she was a wife or concubine of a samurai. He found out she was cheating on him so he slit her mouth. More versions include a jealous woman slitting her mouth because of her beauty, or that her mouth is filled with sharp teeth and caused her mouth to be cut from the inside. She covers her face with a mask and approaches victims to ask "Am I pretty?" Answering yes will cause her to remove her mask and she asks the same question again. Saying no will result in her killing the victim and saying yes will results in her slitting the victim's mouth to resemble her own.
Teke-Teke is an onryo without a lower half of her body. The name came from the sounds she makes dragging her body on the floor while walking. Variations of the story are based on a schoolgirl who fell onto the train track when she was pushed, when she tripped on accident, or when she committed suicide, and was cut in half by the oncoming train. Due to the cold weather, her blood vessels constricted and she crawled for help but due to the missing lower half, no one dared to and she died a slow and agonizing death. She came back as a vengeful spirit and kill anyone she sees by slicing the victim in half with a sickle, mimicking her own misfortune. Although she has no legs, the onryo can run incredibly fast with her arms.
Nukekubi is a yokai who look like normal women but at night, their head can detach completely and levitate to hunt humans for blood. The yokai can be identified by the red marks around their neck, showing signs that their head detaches. Often, they wear pieces of clothing or jewelry to cover the marks. This yokai is similar to a vampire, where they hunt people at night and drain them of their blood.
