During the application process, your application and shadow experience will be reviewed and compared with others that have also applied to your program of interest. The enrollment process is based on points given to the following categories and students are selected based on their point totals:
GPA
Attendance
Past experience, related academics/community work, future goals
Shadow experience
Northland Center for Advanced Professional Studies (Northland CAPS) is the premier provider of professional, innovative educational experiences for students in the Northland region of Kansas City. With classes housed in several business locations throughout Clay and Platte counties, high school juniors and seniors from participating districts are provided a fully immersive educational experience in high-demand, high-skill careers that will rapidly accelerate students down their chosen career path.
The Digital Media & Design strand is for the creative, artistic student that is interested in exploring careers in Digital Media. The strand is divided into four sub strands: graphic design, digital photography, video production and audio production. Student associates in this strand find their passion and develop technical skills by working with local businesses as well as completing personal projects.
The Engineering & Advanced Manufacturing strand is ideal for student associates interested in exploring the multitude of career options available in engineering and advanced manufacturing industries. The experience in this strand is geared toward helping student associates figure out how their passions and skill sets align with industry standards to find the right career and the best path toward it. Student associates in this strand learn valuable professional skills that are useful in any career, including project management and presentation skills. They will also have opportunities to learn industry-specific technical skills such as applying lean manufacturing processes to drive out waste or working with 2D and 3D software to develop concept models.
The Technology Solutions strand is for student associates who are interested in exploring careers and developing skills in multiple areas of technology; these are some of the most highly sought-after skills in the overall job market today! While background knowledge and skills are extremely beneficial, pre-existing expertise in the subject matter is not necessary to be successful in this strand. Student associates will explore a range of opportunities, including software engineering, website development, coding, app development, and database management. Technical skills developed in this strand vary from year to year, depending on industry partner projects and internship focus. Strong emphasis is placed on programming methodology, problem-solving using multiple technical languages, algorithm design and development, data abstraction, and debugging strategies.

The part-time NKC Schools Early College Academy is open to all students entering the Junior or Senior year of high school. Students who pursue this opportunity will attend MCC- Maple Woods or UMKC for half of the school day and earn approximately 10-15 college hours/semester of enrollment at NO COST to families.

Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
Official student disciplinary record from your home high school
Recommendations from two teachers
Record of 90% attendance
College Readiness - Students need a qualifying ACT or MCC Placement Test score that places the into college-level classes at MCC
Must be a junior or senior

Students participating in the MCC-Penn Valley-Advanced Technical Skills Institute (ATSI) Early College Program are provided hands-on opportunities to gain knowledge and learn technical skills to help them be industry ready for careers in the fields of heating ventilation and air conditioning, engineering technology, building maintenance and construction, and welding. Students will attend classes in-person at one of the Metropolitan Community College campuses.
This program is a great option for students who want to go to work after high school, prefer to learn with their hands and heads, want to build their resume, or are unsure about what career/major they are interested in pursuing.

Consult with Your High School Counselor (January 1 - April 7)
Complete the Metropolitan Community College Application at www.mcckc.edu/apply (January 1 - April 7)
Complete the ATSI Early College Program Application by clicking HERE (January 1 - April 7)
Submit ACT Scores and/or Take the Accuplacer Test (February 1 - April 1)
If you have taken the ACT and scored 18 or higher on the English portion of the ACT, have an ACT score of 18 or higher on the reading portion of the ACT, or have scored 22 or higher on the math portion, please email carlton.fowler@mcckc.edu a copy of your ACT scores. If you have an ACT score below any of the thresholds listed in the previous sentence or have not taken the ACT, you will need to take the Accuplacer test, which is a free placement test proctored by MCC. The Accuplacer test is offered virtually or at one of the MCC campuses. You can schedule the Accuplacer test by calling 816-604-1000- you will need your MCC Student number and tell them you applying to be in the NKC Early College Academy. Your high school may also be scheduling an Accuplacer test day.
A High School Representative Will Confirm Your Eligibility for the Program (May 1)
A list of students will be sent to one of your high school representatives to determine your eligibility for the program. You must have a cumulative 2.25 GPA or better, high school attendance of 80% or better, and be in good standing with your high school.
Enroll in ATSI Program Courses (Due Date: May 19)
An MCC staff member will enroll you into 2023 Semester courses after your eligibility is confirmed. You will be sent your schedule via your MCC student email account. Information on how to access your student email will be sent to the email you utilized on your MCC application.
Submit Final Documentation (Due Date: May 19)
You will be emailed the following documents after your high school representative confirms your eligibility to be enrolled in the program. You will need to review the documents and email them to carlton.fowler@mcckc.edu or give to Ms. Gilliland (shannon.gilliland@nkcschools.org).

In July, you will receive an invite to orientation to prepare you for starting courses in the fall. The orientation will be in August.
