I do have a box of my old calendars in the basement. I might be able to sit down with that box of old calendars, try to remember, and try to figure out, which trade shows we did. Admittedly, starting in year 1993 and into the next decade, there would be no digital record (on my side) of the trade shows I'd attended. That was a half dozen computers ago. Facebook and LinkedIn had not yet been invented. By now, the trade show programs from that era — are probably in a landfill.

An official Facebook lapel pin, presented to French Creek Medical and to other small-business owners at the Facebook for Business, Small-Business BOOST event of Wednesday, July 2, 2014 here in Northeast Ohio.
The event was held at Corporate College East at the Warrensville Heights, Ohio campus. At the lunch-and-learn program, U.S. Representative of Ohio's 11th Congressional District, Marcia Fudge, would deliver a speech in which she would welcome attendees from the small-business community to the city of Warrensville Heights. In addition, Rep. Fudge would welcome the speakers from the Facebook platform, itself, here to Cleveland, Ohio. Fudge and the other distinguished speakers would address the conventioneers in speeches about the possibilities of this new day.
Listening to those speeches in 2014, it became evident to me that media consumption was on the cusp of change that had already begun.
Keep in mind, Facebook had only been made available to the general public after mid-2006. At the moment of this convention, the Facebook platform was about to take-off, like a rocket!
Most everyone in Ohio and across America was logging onto Facebook to create a profile for themselves, that is, if that had not already done so.
The Facebook Small-Business BOOST event was a revelation to me that the Facebook platform would become the future of copywriting and of the future of crafting corporate messaging.
Facebook had already become, a decent way to keep-up with family and friends, albeit with posts that would often show, in some cases, only the good times in life.
Then, in other cases, you might log-into FB and find that you are borrowing the trouble of someone who was a mere acquaintance.
In my mind, all of that took some getting used to.
In sales training they tell the salespeople "Be careful what you put into your head." The dawn of social media was no different. I'll be the first one to hit the "logout" button and try to reconnect with people in real life, or, I'll go for an old-fashioned walk in order to clear my head of "all that jazz" because what people post can mess with your own mind.
Nevertheless, Facebook would become the newest way to get the word out about nearly everything. It was a remarkable and an exciting time for everyone involved!
The Facebook pin still brings a smile to my face. I'm still a huge fan of the Facebook and I am aware of the pros and cons the platform. Yet who can argue with the fact that friends can log in, and within moments, see what's going with each other at any time and from nearly any place on the globe. Remarkable! In my mind, the Facebook platform has changed the world, in the time span of a few years. Even today, I will log in to the Facebook and I continue to be amazed by it all!

Editor's note: During this era, the French Creek Medical delivery van had not yet arrived on the scene. At this point, Wible was still driving a 2003 Toyota Prius which would be driven through conditions typical of a Northeast Ohio winter. A snowstorm had rolled-in across Cleveland and west beyond Toledo earlier that day. Squalls would continue off and on that night. The storm brought ice and snow that covered the roads and highways from Cleveland to Indianapolis.

Pictured in chilly, wintertime of February 2015, these photos detail a few stops along the way when one visits the convention area of Indianapolis - which spans several city blocks. This area includes the convention center, the football field, and the JW Marriott .
In conjunction with the APTA CSM 2015 event, a tour of the stadium was offered to the conventioneers. Admittedly, I skipped the tour of the new stadium. However, there was a moment during the convention, when I walked outside to get some fresh air.. I took one peek at the new structure. I was amazed!

Below: You can watch the entire program that has been published to YouTube. Watching the program on YouTube doesn't really compare to actually being at the lunchtime event. When you attend the event in-person, you are provided with an assigned seat.
Then, you sit down at your assigned round table, and you "break bread" with fellow Clevelanders. After brief introductions, everyone at the table begins to discuss the day's events and what's going-on around town. Then, the keynote speaker takes the stage. You learn something new or maybe you hear a new view point on the topic of the day.
The City Club of Cleveland is a wonderful luncheon to attend. Here's the replay, on YouTube, of that September 2015 event:

Then, if you look to the far back of the embedded picture, you will see a bald man - who is seated to the left of the giant, colorful, wall painting. That person, who is seated just below the lighted, triangular wall sconce, is me.
Yup. The bald guy, there, is me.
I'm not Vic DiBitetto, but I'm probably "Havin' a cup of cawfee."

Yeah, the coffee thing is a meme.
And I do what I can - to keep the page interesting.
And while my coffee blurb is light-hearted, be sure to strap-on your seatbelts....
Because in the next paragraphs, we'll ponder the Vietnam War. The aftermath.
Lessons learned.
Then, how all of that became interconnected.
Present day, I'll conclude with a mention of the fitted dress shirt on your back. The Derby style dress shoes on your feet. How how all of that relates to Vietnam.
Thinking back to year 2015 - this particular City Club Forum was a remarkable event to attend!
I tell people about it all the time. "I was there! I heard the speech - in real life!"
Present day, Cleveland Clinic London has opened.
Today, The Clinic has a new CEO at the helm of it all.
Yet, often times, I think back to this particular event.
All of the planets aligned - and I had the chance to be there!
In year 2026, small business owners might not have the time to attend an event, like this, these days. And this may be a bit of an exageration. However, I've got to believe that, today, those dot-com owners are probably sitting at their desks trying to navigate the updates that the Supreme Court made to the Wayfair decision. Climbing heaps of red tape. For example. Remit your sales tax in 45 states. Be sure you that have a vendor license in each state. Each county in each state has a different sales tax rate. Undoubtedly, running a dot-com was easier for business owners before the Wayfair updates of June 21, 2018.
Regardless, there are times when I go back to sitting there at that luncheon. I think about that speech. The life experience of that speaker. The Vietnam War. Back then, the young surgeon. The wounded infantry in the jungles of Vietnam being helicoptered out of there - on a Huey. Discovering the dangers of smoking. All the way up to the present day. And the growth of that healthcare system, too. Somehow, it's all connected.
Present day, take a peek at the label of so many consumer goods - including men's shoes, that shirt you wear with your necktie and menswear in general.
Guess where your shirt was sewn?
Vietnam.
Look. I don't know.
I'm not going to open a can of worms about all that. I will mention that I did attend Kent State. So this is an aside. Late-night, I'll watch the programs on television or on YouTube. I sit there and think: "Thank God I didn't have to go over there and do that..."
That goes for World War II, also. Young kids in the early 1940s flying a B-17 over Germany. Flak everywhere.
Take a peek at "Masters of the Air" on Apple TV.
Then I think: "Hope my kids don't have to go do anything like that, either. Today or tommorow....."
Obviously, I am not claiming that I would have been around to remember all of that happening in Vietnam.
On this website, I might have mentioned that I missed seeing and hearing the live feed of Apollo 11 landing on the moon. Okay. Maybe Apollo 16. Not Apollo 11.
The moon landing. Vietnam. I hear stories about it. Certainly, everyone who lived during that era endured a lot. I think about that, too.
Everyone has a story.
Anyhow....
We are lucky to have amazing hospitals here in Cleveland. The Cleveland Clinic. University Hospitals of Cleveland. MetroHealth. They're all great!
Meanwhile, these City Club luncheons, the associated forums, and the speeches are inspirational events.
Even when I can't make it downtown to hear a speech, I'll listen to the program on public radio, or I'll watch the replay of each speech on YouTube.
In my opinion, participation in these forums is what it means to be "a Clevelander!"
We are fortunate to have the City Club and their events, here, in Cleveland.
