With the building of Stitch's Great Escape closing in on almost 7 years closed, and Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin having two of it's counterparts closing already, it was clear that the front area of Tomorrowland needed an update. The front half of the land gets a complete overhaul, now representing a futuristic look, at a not so distant past. The land is complete with a new set of 1950's Retrofuturstic designs of a spaceport, complete with tourist attractions, entertainment, landscapes, and more. These new updates to the front area and hub help transform the land into the world of tomorrow (According to the world of the past)!
Map
With our partial redo of Tomorrowland, we have taken the opportunity to not only reshape the identity of the land for what will be a cohesive, living place, but also reshape the physical layout itself. Limited to the structures lining the entry from the hub, we used this as a chance to create a major shift in how guests explore Tomorrowland. Architectural influences from the Space Mountain and Carousel of Progress structures find their way into these new areas as well.
The wide, main thoroughfare entry from the hub running towards Astro Orbiter remains, however the entire plaza is now covered by a dazzling, LED embedded roof providing protection from the Florida elements and a fantastic visual for guest’s night and day. Connecting the main structures on either side of the entry immediately helps to convey the sensation of truly entering a new world, or in this case spaceport.
The area formally occupied by Stitch/Alien Encounter, Star Traders, Auntie Gravity’s, and restrooms remains intact, albeit with newly curved wall panels framing the Speedway side of the structure to blend with structures in the land. Not only occupied by the land’s new dark ride, Classic Romance, the area also houses one of the main shopping locations and the new Tomorrowland Hall of Honor, a small walkthrough experience where Star Traders and restrooms previously existed.
Across the way sees the biggest change as a new path suddenly bisects what was the Laugh Floor and Space Ranger Spin structure. While we do lose some physical building space, the land does gain more walkable and explorable areas with which to immerse themselves in the spaceport. Walking down the path towards a circular rotunda like space, guests will find a 2-story restaurant, show, additional dining, and shopping as well as a small, 2-person luxury space cruiser parked for the port’s newest arriving guests.
