Three days of virtual socializing during the Erasmus+ international project "Let's build tomorrow life space"
At the Krško-Sevnica School Center, from October 2019 to September 2022, we are implementing an international Erasmus + project with the working name "Building a residence of the future". More than 30 teachers and 150 students aged between 15 and 19 from six general and vocational schools in France, Portugal, Italy, Slovenia, Estonia and Austria are participating in the project.
As part of the project, from October 12 to 14, we hosted a virtual meeting of six partner countries at ŠC Krško-Sevnica. In the intensive afternoon activities, we connected different learning contents from the programs taught at different locations of the center. In the carpentry program at Sevnica Secondary School, under the guidance of mentor Boštjan Čepin, they made a wooden transport beehive before the meeting. It is currently on display in the Lutrovski cellar of the Sevnica castle as part of the "Charm of wood" event - until November 2, 2021. They will enter it with the help of electrical, computer and mechanical students from SPSŠ Krško and Gymnasium Krško under the guidance of prof. Svetlane Novak installed measuring instruments that will be used to monitor the condition of the bees and the apiary online. The apiary will have its own energy source from photovoltaic panels. It also has an apitherapy area. Bees will settle in it in the spring, and honey plants will be planted next to it. With this, they will get closer to the goals of the project, which aims to develop awareness among young people about sustainable development and care for ecology, which is also based on reducing the carbon footprint of human economic activities. The first day of the meeting began with the opening remarks of the mayors Miran Stanko and Srečko Ocvirk and the director of ŠC Krško-Sevnica Jože Pavlovič. The host cities, Sevnica and Krško, and Slovenia as the host country were presented to the foreign guests. They watched an interview with dr. Peter Kozmus, vice president of the international beekeeping organization Apimondia, otherwise employed at the Beekeeping Association of Slovenia. He spoke about the importance of bees and their danger, and the book No Bees, No Life, which he co-authored, was previously sent to all partner countries. In the following, students from all countries presented research papers on beekeeping in their city or country. They tested their knowledge in a quiz. The second day of the meeting was dedicated to woodworking. It started with a greeting from the principal of Sevnica High School, Matjaž Prestor, and a presentation of the school. The rich tradition of using wood in Slovenia was emphasized, and cross-glued panels were emphasized as building blocks of beehives and houses of the future. Foreign guests were presented with an interview with Igor Melavec, director of the Association of the Wood and Furniture Industry at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia, and with dr. Milan Šernek, lecturer at the Department of Woodworking at the Faculty of Biotechnology. They watched a film about the construction of a school apiary and made a practical analysis of the well-being in a wooden building. Through the presentations, they learned about the advantages of wooden constructions, also from an environmental point of view.
The third day of the meeting was devoted to furnishing the residence or of our "smart" beehive with sensors and measuring instruments. Assistant Klemen Sredenšek presented the Faculty of Energy of the UM from Krško and solutions for electricity supply to the guests. An Arduino kit for "smart" houses was presented, and then our fourth-year computer science students led guests in workshops with "micro:bit" devices. With this, they simulated the operation of the meters that will be installed in the apiary: bee counter, control of the amount of honey, external measurements of the weather, internal measurements of temperature, humidity, sound of bees - an indicator of the health of the hives). The work ended with a quiz, gathering opinions and an official farewell.
