Trademark registrations filed at the end of September 2023 suggest the upcoming return of Tomodachi Life. An eccentric, Mii-centric social simulator originally released for the 3DS, Tomodachi Life is a truly unique game in its genre. However, despite its success, Tomodachi Life remained stagnant on the 3DS for its entire lifespan. There's never been word of a follow-up or port, but new information suggests that could be subject to change.
But besides that, what's interesting about Tomodachi Life is its commitment to total personalization. Since they're all homemade Miis, each character is custom-built by the player from the ground up. Players select not only their appearance, but also their voice and their personality. They can fill an entire island with their real-life friends, favorite celebrities, unusual Mii creations, or a combination of the three. Miis can also sing custom songs and say custom catchphrases, all of which are delivered in the deadpan drone of computerized text-to-speech voices. Whether by the player's own design or the unpredictability of the Miis' actions, it's rife with surreally hilarious potential.

i booted tomodachi life with citra the other day and this morning and it worked fine, but halfway through the day the game lagged really badly and i was unable to do anything so i force quit. since then, it takes twice as long as before to load in shaders, and it always gets stuck on the last shader and seemingly either crashes after loading it in or while trying to load it in. half of the time i try to open the game it also lags out my whole pc and i have to force restart

Tomodachi Life is a quirky life simulator from Nintendo for the Nintendo 2/3DS platform. The game is a sequel to the Japan-only game Tomodachi Collection. Tomodachi is the Japanese word for "friend."
Nintendo is apologizing and pledging to be more inclusive after being criticized for not recognizing same-sex relationships in English editions of a life-simulator video game. The publisher said that while it was too late to change the current game, it was committed to building virtual equality into future versions if they're produced.
"I want to be able to marry my real-life fianc's Mii, but I can't do that," Marini said in a video posted online that attracted the attention of gaming sites and online forums this past week. "My only options are to marry some female Mii, to change the gender of either my Mii or my fianc's Mii or to completely avoid marriage altogether and miss out on the exclusive content that comes with it."
Still, Tomodachi Life is quite the wacky novelty while it lasts, particularly if you're populating your virtual island with friends and family from your own life--or, in my case, members of the GameSpot UK crew. You can create some eerily recognizable caricatures of your chums using the standard Mii creation tools, along with the new customizable voices for the game's text-to-speech engine. Granted, the text-to-speech engine isn't the most flattering, but its slightly robotic qualities add to the kitsch charm of the game. Likewise, a set of assignable attributes, such as how much energy your Miis have or how serious or light their moods are, add personality and generate a specific profile for each one. That profile isn't just for show, either. Likes, dislikes, how needy they are, how often they need to be fed, and their compatibility with other Miis are all linked into each character's personality profile.
Disappointingly, that same level of customization doesn't apply to the island itself, which is built up automatically--not that you don't already have your hands full. Needy Miis cry out for food as soon as they've set foot in their shared apartment block, while others demand new clothes, or a new premade look for their bare home. Shops scattered around the island are stocked with an eclectic range of cuisines and items from the familiar to the downright bizarre to spoil your Miis with. Edibles like spaghetti Bolognese from Italy, roast beef from England, and beef bourguignon from France--complete with quirky real-life pictures--make up the cuisine, while checked shirts, summer dresses, and more esoteric items like ice cream hats and firefighter uniforms make up the outfits.
What you're left with is a sophisticated Tamagotchi, and a repetitive cycle of feeding, nursing, and entertaining that is hardly the most absorbing of pastimes. A much deeper system of development for Miis would have gone a long way towards keeping things interesting. That said, there are so many hilarious and curiously bizarre moments to be found along the way that even if the journey to fully fledged family life is a short one before the repetition sets in, it's well worth the trip.
Despite the vast amount of customization added in Miitopia, one feature is notably missing from both that game and Tomodachi Life: the ability to give Miis tattoos and piercings. Although it's possible to recreate a plethora of characters and real-life people in both games, many of them have tattoos and piercings that are notably missing from their Mii counterparts.
I got really attached to my townsfolk in Tomodachi life (that's me front and center). I came to know them all pretty well through our experiences together, so I may as well introduce you to my new digital pals.

Tomodachi Life is a bit like Nintendo's other life-sim Animal Crossing, in that it's best enjoyed in small doses. Even with a dozen or so islanders, checking in and solving everyone's problems will probably take you less than half an hour. New problems arise throughout the day, of course, and there are regularly scheduled events that you can check in on. Every morning there's a farmer's market where you can buy ramen or pancakes, and at 6:00PM sharp there's a rap battle near the fountain, where you can watch Miis trade rhymes. Every night at the amusement park an arcade machine opens up, where you can play a simplified version of Final Fantasy starring island residents.
Tomodachi Life won't let you build the perfect virtual life like in The Sims. But that's not really the point. It's the only way you can watch your best buddy doing yoga while living in a giant hamster cage and wearing a motorcycle helmet, and that's pretty special. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go hypnotize my wife.
"The relationship options in the game represent a playful alternate world rather than a real-life simulation," Nintendo said. "We hope that all of our fans will see that Tomodachi Life was intended to be a whimsical and quirky game, and that we were absolutely not trying to provide social commentary."
Tye Marini recently began a campaign, dubbed Miiquality, to allow same-sex marriages within the game. As a gay player, Marini wants to be able to marry his real-life fiance's Mii, but isn't allowed due to the constraints on homosexual relationships.
One successful game that shows that Tomodachi Life may be due for a second coming is Nintendo's Miitopia. This was similar to Tomodachi Life as a life simulator featuring Miis, but it featured more heavy RPG elements. With both of these recent successes for the Mii brand, it would be unsurprising if Nintendo was to try and capitalize on the franchise and its many fans.
