I am a philosopher and aspiring theoretical cognitive scientist specializing in the study of musical meaning and representation. I earned my PhD in Philosophy from Jagiellonian University in 2023, with a dissertation entitled The Problem of Musical Meaning in the Light of Cognitive Aesthetics of Music (in Polish: Problem znaczenia muzycznego w świetle kognitywnej estetyki muzyki). In that work, I explored how cognitive music aesthetics can enrich our understanding of philosophical questions concerning musical representation and significance.
My first monograph, Music and Mind: The Problem of Musical Meaning in the Light of Cognitive Aesthetics of Music, is scheduled for publication in May 2025 by Semper. I am currently a program coordinator for Cognitive Science Studies and a board member at the Institute of Philosophy and Cognitive Science at the University of Szczecin. I teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in Polish and English for philosophy, cognitive science, and psychology students.
In the spring semester of the 2024/25 academic year, I am teaching, among others, Philosophy of Music, Philosophy of Science, Problems of Cognitive Science IV: Attitudes, and Introductory Philosophy with Logic (please see the “Teaching” section for more details). I have also taught at Engame Academia in Budapest, offering courses such as What Is My Mind? Introduction to Cognitive Science and Introduction to Philosophy of Science. While living in Hungary, I contributed as a staff columnist for Polonia Węgierska, writing the popular series Through a Philosopher's Crooked Eye (pl: Krzywym okiem filozofa), and occasionally authored pieces for the philosophy magazine Filozofuj!. In addition, I led the Philosophy Society at Engame Academia, organized workshops on cognitive science for teachers, and managed website content for the Department of Cognitive Science at Jagiellonian University.
My peer-reviewed publications reflect an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on philosophy of mind, evolutionary psychology, and cognitive neuroscience to address questions about musical representation. Selected works include “Musical Representation and the Philosophy of Mind” (“Reprezentacja muzyczna a filozofia umysłu,” Filozofia Nauki) and chapters in edited volumes for Peter Lang, such as Explanation and Reduction in the Cognitive Neuroscience Approach to the Musical Meaning Problem and Language of Emotions, Peacock’s Tail or Auditory Cheesecake? Musical Meaning: Philosophy vs. Evolutionary Psychology. I am also an active conference participant, presenting at leading gatherings in cognitive science, philosophy, and aesthetics across Europe.
Some of my additional experiences include coordinating workshops under European Research Council (ERC) projects, completing a research stay at the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Music and Science (under the supervision of Professor Ian Cross), and reviewing for academic journals and conferences (including CogSci). I speak Polish (native), English (fluent), and have basic understanding in German, French and Hungarian.
