Małgorzatki Square in Radom – a concept for transforming public space
Current status: Małgorzatki Square, located in the very center of Radom, is a space with significant urban potential, yet currently underutilized to meet the needs of a modern city. This area, located between Malczewskiego and Żeromskiego Streets, is surrounded by buildings of various types – from commercial and residential buildings to commercial structures. However, it lacks a coherent spatial concept, small architectural elements, tall greenery, and pedestrian zones that would encourage communion and integration.
Need for transformation:
The square requires significant revitalization and the creation of a distinctive urban character. The space, which currently serves primarily as a transit and parking area, could become a new center of social life in this part of Radom – a place for meetings, cultural events, recreation, and modern retail and services. Proposed transformation concept:
The visualization and site plan depict the square as an elegant, modern public space dominated by high-quality surfaces, representative trees in the form of carefully designed green islands, and new frontage development.
The proposal assumes:
Preserving and highlighting the existing tall greenery (three large trees in the central part of the square), which provide the site with identity and natural shade.
Introducing new frontage development (orange on the plan), which will enclose the square and enable the introduction of service and cultural functions.
Modernizing the square's surface using highly aesthetic and durable materials, with subtle linear lighting at ground level.
Creating horizontal relaxation and social activity zones – light platforms, seating around trees, and low terrace stairs.
Sustaining the scale of the development (green outline on the plan), integrating the new functions with the existing urban layout. Significance for the city:
Plac Małgorzatki has the potential to become a contemporary equivalent of the urban living room – a space of high architectural and social culture, embedded in the historical fabric of Radom. The project exemplifies a modern approach to revitalization: it combines functionality, aesthetics, and place identity, while also addressing the real needs of residents and users of the city center.
