Throughout my career I have delivered speeches and presentations to a wide variety of audiences. I have given speeches to students (grade school age to college age), large banquet gatherings of the business community, community rally events, groups of elected officials, rotary clubs, school superintendents, local events with community members, commencements and inauguration events. Frequently, I am interviewed by local radio, newspaper and television. I enjoy these engagements because they are a venue to discuss important topics and address challenges and opportunities in our region. I enjoy writing my own speeches, often thoroughly edited by my wonderful wife. Having worked for a media consulting firm early in my career I learned how to write press releases and write radio and television ad scripts. These skills have come in handy throughout my career.
Important to my leadership style is communication with my team and board members. I meet weekly with my full team as it is a venue for everyone to speak, provide updates and identify issues that may need a deeper dive discussion off-line. I also like to check in weekly with each of my team members. Each member maintains a goal sheet, which is the basis of our weekly discussion. I also like to meet with team members on a project specific basis. The individual and team meetings are great opportunities to not only check in but to understand how I can help and support my team members. In terms of board member communication, I am in frequent contact with our boards’ executive committees and provide email updates to the full board in months where we may not have a meeting. I like to meet with each board member individually on an annual basis to gather their input and understand what they desire as a participant on the board. These individual meetings provide an opportunity to review the organizational structure, goal tree and financial statements.
The business organizations I have led, produce a significant amount of content that is distributed to our member/investors. I have been fortunate to have support staff with whom I have collaborated on content pieces. There were many times when I wrote a column for the Chamber's weekly publication or an editorial piece and have staff review and provide feedback. Likewise, there are times when I worked with staff on the Chamber's weekly publication and I would review and provide feedback. I am proud to say that as a team we did a stellar job during the pandemic. At a time when there was an abundance of information and as businesses were either going on pause or significantly cutting back on workforce per state mandates, we cut through the detail and confusion and identified the essential information our member/investors needed and put it in their hands quickly. As we advocated for the safe reopening of the economy, we helped our member/investors develop reopening plans to insure they were in compliance with state requirements. We then worked with our member/investors to help them navigate the vaccination process so they can help their workers access vaccine either at on-site clinics or local public clinics.
One of the best parts of my job is the opportunity to honor great people in our community. As master of ceremonies at the Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting I presented Ronnie Graham with an award for his years of dedication and work with youth in the region.
One of several zoom sessions during the pandemic. This one featured then Lt. Governor Hochul as our featured speaker at the Chamber's Annual Meeting.
Discussing challenges and opportunity for our region at the Annual Congressional Luncheon. An armchair discussion with Congressman Reed.
Meeting with ownership at Liberty Vineyards and learning about wine making.
Visiting Dawson Metal and checking out a set of doors that are getting ready to ship.
Welcoming Governor Andrew Cuomo to the community.
Welcoming Senator Gillibrand to the community and introducing her to my son Lawton.
This is a photo of Phoenix Mayor Skip Rimsza's team. I worked with David Schwartz on a mass transit initiative. David served as an advisor on the Mayor's staff. Following the mass transit initiative I was asked to join the Mayor's team. In this capacity I was often asked to speak on behalf of the Mayor.
