I am a researcher in second language acquisition pursuing my Ph.D. student at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD), part of which I completed under a laCaixa fellowship. I have worked along the late Mike Long and Steven Ross at UMD, and I am currently advised by Nan Jiang. Previously, I was advised by Sharon Unsworth and Chantal van Dijk at Radboud University, and Ana Maria Schwartz Caballero during my MA at University of Maryland, Baltimore County, which I pursued under a Fulbright scholarship. Recently, I also assisted Dr. Faroqi Shah's Aphasia Research Center as a member of the Bilingual Assessment Research lab.
Recently, I have been working with Frederick J. Poole at Michigan State University to leverage my expertise and apply it to Artificial Intelligence, with the goal of providing open-access resources based on experimental research for people to work on their Catalan independently. As part of these efforts, I have joined in on Anna Joan Cademont's efforts to further the corpus of learners of Catalan to outline developmental learning sequences tailored to learners' needs from a cognitive perspective.
My research focuses on exploring the interplay between explicit and implicit knowledge and individual differences such as working memory, executive functions, linguistic background, and aptitude. To investigate these topics, I adopt a cognitive approach, considering both the structure of memory systems and the learners' personal background. However, I strongly believe that we need a solid base on instrumentation, with valid and reliable measurement tools shared through open science. To me, this is the only way forward to develop practices based on theoretically-grounded research. Without this, we are attempting to build knowledge on a shaky foundation. My passion for these topics is driven by my desire to create fairer, more accessible, equitable, and personalized assessments and instruction for learners.
Whenever free time allows, I enjoy going back to my roots and diving into Catalan literature and culture, playing with all the dogs in need of pets, baking, discovering new craft beers, and dragging people to the outdoors (especially national parks!). I also find conferences to be a fantastic excuse to go explore. To the left, you can get insight into some of my non-academic interests, places I love, and things I do. Check it out!
