In this chapter, Dave explains much of what we already know. Adding movement helps to engage our brains by sending extra oxygen and blood flow. Below are a few of my favorite lessons that came to mind as I read.
THE KINESTHETIC HOOK
My students used the tiles on the floor and walked all over the schoolhouse calculating the distance between two points using right angles and the Pythagorean Theorem. We have danced on life-size transversals.
THE PEOPLE PROP HOOK
We graphed equations of lines using students as the points. Human number lines with "prop movers."
THE SAFARI HOOK
They used RC Cars outside to find rate of change and graph it, Geocached around the school, and Barbie Bungeed off the football stadium bleachers.
In all of these, just as Dave writes, there was an increase in my room's energy and the engagement was there because it was so novel.
