About

The TKA Junior High Math Team is a community of students and coaches who meet twice a week after school to grow together in their math and problem-solving skills. This team provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity for junior high students to learn and find community with other students—students who are interested in math competitions, want to challenge their math skills, or simply like math. Students also have the opportunity to compete in various competitions throughout the year, both individually and as a team!

The Junior High Math Team meets on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:00pm-4:30pm.

Please contact math.team@tka.org if you have any questions.

Kaleb So

Kaleb is a PSP student in 11th grade. He’s loved math since elementary school and has been doing math competitions since 5th grade. This will be his second season coaching at TKA, and he will also continue to serve as Competition Director this year. Though Kaleb has mocked every AMC8 and AMC10 out there, he’s still often surprised by how suddenly and creatively solutions to tough problems can be found. Outside of math, Kaleb’s loves are music and philosophy—he plays cello, possesses some (rather shaky) piano skills, and is currently reading Gödel, Escher, Bach by Douglas Hofstadter.

Favorite Number: 13

Jackie Shan

Jacqueline is a sophomore here at TKA, but feel free to call her “Jackie”. She will serve as the Co-President of the Math Team with Kaleb this year. She fell in love with math in fifth grade, and ever since, it’s been a part of her daily routine. She loves the essence of working towards one objective answer, which is exactly what pulls her into mathematics. She started in math team at TKA five years ago in sixth grade, been coaching since seventh, President since ninth…and she’s really excited to serve everyone! Other than math, some of Jackie’s passions are robotics, dance, and piano.

Stuart Chen

Stuart first began loving math during COVID when his friend sent him a YouTube video of a guy who was really excited about math. Since then, he’s joined the math team and has been passionate about problem solving ever since. This will be his third year being involved in the math team and second year as a coach, where he will also help as a graphic designer. Outside of math team, he watches YouTube videos about math, participates in TKA’s tech crew program, procrastinates, writes long emails, and enjoys graphic design and video editing, all while not finishing his homework.

This is Henry’s second year coaching in the math team. He joined the math team in 6th grade during covid, and has enjoyed serving and learning with the team ever since. In math, Henry loves to grind out countdown round problems, and is always pleased when a seemingly complex problem has a simple solution!
