The King's Academy Junior High Math Team consists of ~24 junior high students, led by a team of 13 high school student coaches (read their bios below!). Our staff advisor is Dr. Ting (elisa.ting@tka.org), who currently teaches Science 8 and Physical Science at TKA.
House System: Students and coaches are sorted by skill level into 4 "houses," each with 6 students and 3-4 coaches. The House System is designed to create opportunities for students to receive more personalized help from coaches, as well as allow them to build relationships with other students in a smaller group. Houses compete to earn "House Points" for boba at the end of each month. Opportunities for earning points include participation, attendance, and completing homework.
Practices: During the school year, the Junior High Math Team meets twice a week on Wednesdays and Thursdays after school from 3:15 pm - 4:45 pm.
Applying: No prior competition experience is required to apply for Math Team. If you are accepted and join the team, $400 will be billed to your family's FACTS account to cover books, t-shirts, and competition registration fees.
Application Process: Due to the size of the classroom and number of student coaches, Math Team is highly selective, and applying does not guarantee a spot on the team. Applicants are required to take a diagnostic test and some students may be asked to interview with a coach as part of the application process.
Attendance: Math Team members are required to attend at least 85% of practices. View our Attendance/Sports Policy for more information.
Competitions: Students who are not accepted in the math team will still have the chance to compete at math competitions throughout the year. Read more on our Competitions page.
Math Team is not just a place for students to improve their math skills, but more importantly a community of mathletes working together.
The coaches for Math Team hope to impart to students both math concepts and problem-solving skills.
Everyone in the Math Team community should help foster an encouraging environment centered on a love for math and problem-solving.
Hi! I’m Jackie, a senior at TKA. I’ve been part of math team since 6th grade, began coaching in 7th, and have served as president since 9th. I have qualified for AIME, earned AMC8’s DHR, and placed first at TKA’s MathCounts School Competition. I hope to make math team not just a place to learn and share math, but also a space to connect and feel part of a community. Most importantly, I hope you all will have fun...especially with our monthly boba prizes from Happy Lemon :) Outside of math, I also enjoy piano, competitive dance, and going on daily boba tea shop runs -- feel free to call me anytime to grab drinks or popcorn chicken!
Hi, I’m Giselle, and I’m a senior at TKA. I have been a part of TKA Math Team since 6th grade, starting as a coach in 7th grade. My love for math led me to qualify for AIME and earn the AMC distinguished honor roll in middle school. However, through various coaching and tutoring experiences, I discovered my true passion: helping others learn. I hope that my students can carry a joyful learning attitude, believing that having fun and a positive attitude is key to successful learning. I am honored to serve as a TKA math coach, where I can continue to learn and grow alongside other amazing peer coaches. Outside of math, I like playing games, singing, and cooking!
Hi, I’m Charlie, a freshman, and this is my exciting first year as a coach in the Math Team. I was part of the TKA JH Math Team in the past three years and attended all the scheduled math competitions.
I have been doing competition math since 4th grade. I have qualified for AIME 4 times in a row (since 5th grade), placed on the Distinguished Honor Roll for both AMC10 and AMC8, achieved top 10 on 2024 BMT(Berkeley Math Tournament) General Round and Math League National, got first place at HMI(Harker Math Invitational) twice in the Individual Rounds and once in Team Round, and also got first place at the SFBA ARML (American Regions Mathematics League) Local competition and was selected into one of the SFBA elite teams for 2025 ARML National. Outside of math, I like science, coding, music, and exploring places and streets on Google Maps.
Hi, I’m Henry, a junior at TKA. I’ve been involved with the TKA Math team since 6th grade, and started coaching in 7th grade. Back when I competed with the TKA Math team, I achieved AMC 8 HR, won TKA MathCounts School, and won 1st place at HMI alongside coaches Andrew, Daniel and Matthew in 7th grade, which is honestly when I peaked. As not only the co-competition director alongside Alyssa but also the co-president alongside Jackie, I’m hoping to help students in math team reach the same (or hopefully better) level of peak that I did and have fun while doing it! Beside math I love playing games, volleyball, and playing many of my various instruments.
Hi! I’m Dayeon, a junior at TKA. This is my second year as a math team coach and even though I haven’t been a part of the TKA math team as a JH student, I was always part of the math club in my middle school. I’ve competed and placed in many different math contests including AMC8’s DHR, qualifying for AIME, and placing top 20th in BMT Algebra Round. I also work as a TA at AoPS and a self-employed math tutor. I hope students are able to improve but also enjoy math through our team :) Besides math, I love kpop and dancing!
Hey! I’m Matthew, a junior at TKA. I’ve been a part of the math team since 6th grade and this is my second year coaching. I have competed in many math competitions: BMT, Mathcounts, and AMC. I love math because it is the basis for many other disciplines and phenomenons in the world, being logically demanding and full of fun! Fundamentally, math is vital to understanding a digitalized age full of numbers, data, and information. I am excited to coach you all, and through it, maybe we can teach each other a thing or two about each other and the world around us. In my free time, I enjoy reading manga/watching anime, especially one piece, robotics, tennis, and coding.
Hi! I’m Kaden, a freshman at The King’s Academy and a member of the TKA math team since 6th grade. I’ve been passionate about competition math ever since I first got involved, and I’m excited to be a math coach this year to help others discover how fun and rewarding it can be. Over the years, I’ve earned AMC 8 Honor Roll in 6th and 7th grade, Distinguished Honor Roll in 8th grade, placed in the top 10% on the AMC 10, and received Distinguished Honorable Mention at BmMT in 7th & 8th grade. In my spare time, I also work as a math tutor and enjoy helping others build confidence in problem solving. Outside of math, I like playing chess, badminton, swimming, and traveling to explore new places around the world. I look forward to an awesome year of coaching, learning, and growing together!
Daniel is a junior at TKA and has been a part of the math team since 6th grade. He started coaching last year and has qualified for AIME. He enjoys coming up with challenging problems and solving them, especially in discrete and geometry. Daniel hopes to be the best lead problem-writer that he can this year, creating challenging and interesting problems for our annual math competition. He also loves playing table tennis, coding, reading books/articles, and playing games. Don’t worry, Daniel will save your money by not drinking much boba throughout the school year (he’s altruistic like that).
Hi, I’m Andrew, a junior at TKA. I have been involved in the TKA math team since the summer before 6th grade, and started coaching in 7th grade. I love math competitions and have qualified three times for AIME, achieved the AMC 8 honor roll two times, and placed top 10 in Mathcounts Chapter. Outside of math, I enjoy playing (formerly competitive) chess, tennis, and 3D printing cool things. I look forward to coaching in math team again this year, and hope to be able to share my passion for math with everyone!
Hi! I’m Isabel, a sophomore at TKA. This is my second year as a math team coach, but I’ve been a part of math team since 6th grade. I have participated in many math competitions, including being placed on the Honor Roll for AMC8. Other than math, I also enjoy coding, drawing, baking, and listening to music. I hope to create a community where students can have fun learning math!
Hi, I’m Alyssa, a senior at TKA. I have been a part of the Junior High Math Team since 6th grade and leadership from 9th. I’ve always loved the joy that comes with working through math problems with others and want to share that joy with fellow students. I hope to inspire others in their math journeys this year while also helping foster community with and towards the students in the math team. This year, I’m serving as secretary (w/ Dayeon), coach, and co-competition director for our school-hosted math competitions (alongside Henry). Besides math, I also enjoy piano, books, and dance!
Hi, I’m Stuart, and I can’t believe I’m already a senior at TKA! (The entropy of the universe is rapidly increasing.) I joined the Junior High Math Team in 8th grade and loved it so much that I continued in high school as a coach. I’m grateful for the opportunity I’ve had at TKA to mentor younger students in the art of problem-solving. I love how competition math exposes students to a side of mathematics not commonly taught in schools and gives them the tools to solve unique math problems that aren’t simply grouped into problem “types” they've already learned. This year, I’ll be leading the design team as well as coaching Ptolemy House. When I’m not doing stuff for math team, you can find me running tech for TKA’s theatre productions, singing in TKA’s show choir Knightshine, trying to convince people to take Chem Honors, procrastinating on overdue homework, watching too many YouTube videos, or filming cinematic videos of my quail.
Hi, I’m Jeff, an incoming freshman and this is my first year as a math team coach. I’ve been part of the math team since 7th grade and have participated in most of the competition throughout the year. Some hobbies I have are listening to music, coding, reading, robotics, volleyball, and swimming. I hope that I can get to know you all throughout the year and feel free to ask me about anything!
