My name is Torsten Jochem. I am an Associate Professor in Finance at the University of Amsterdam.
My research centers on understanding employee incentives, the dynamics of shareholder engagement through voting and activism, and the intended and unintended consequences of governance-related securities legislation and quasi-standards established by regulators and proxy advisers. I also explore governance issues across disciplines, particularly in voting mechanisms and the organization of teams in scientific settings.
My teaching focuses on two areas: corporate governance and methodological methods in finance. My current courses include Corporate Governance, Computational Finance, and a Python bootcamp. Until 2024, I also taught Machine Learning and AI for Finance and FinTech. My teaching goal is to prepare students for the growing intersection of finance and technology. Specifically, I would like every UvA finance graduate to leave with solid coding skills and a keen awareness of the pervasive influence of governance issues in the financial sector.
