What does the Choir fee entail?
The TJH Choir Student Program Fee is $50. This is required from each singer. A portion of this fee will be used to provide all choir students with our annual choir t-shirt. In addition, the student program fee will help us pay for our choir uniforms and storage materials, our accompanist, transportation, and other materials we need for the success of the choir program.
If my child joins as a 7th or 8th grader, do they start in beginning choir with 6th graders?
All beginning students will start with choirs of their grade level! So if you child is new to choir in 7th or 8th grade, they will be in a class/choir with other 7th and 8th graders. 6th grade students will start in 6th grade choir.
Are there any after school commitments?
The only afterschool requirements are the 4 annual concerts. Other than these, there are no required events outside of school!
What are the skills that are taught in choir?
We teach a variety of skills in choir- both music and other skills. The music skills we teach include how to read rhythms, music, musical symbols, vocal technique, singing posture, and sight reading! Some of the non-musical skills we teach are teamwork, self-confidence, discipline, world cultures, goal setting, communication, problem solving, and coordination. The skills learned in choir will equip your child for life well after they leave Tays.
What will I need to supply my child with?
We will supply your child with everything they need for class, but you will need to supply a few things for their choir uniform. 6th grade students will need black dress pants, black shoes, and a black belt.
What fun things do we do in choir?
The best reward is learning to sing and make music! You will experience many parties, trips, concerts, contests & performances throughout the year!
Can my child participate in both athletics and choir at the same time? What about a combination of other electives?
In 7th and 8th grade YES, but NOT in 6th grade. Athletics is not offered in the 6th grade. There is only ONE elective in 6th grade and students. In 7th & 8th grade, students may take more electives than they can in 6th grade. There are many middle school students who are in choir, athletics, and other organizations such as theatre arts, band, etc. Because of the unique nature of singing and learning to read music, we try to encourage students to begin choir in 6th grade and then take other electives along with choir in their 7th & 8th grade years. If you want your child to join choir, you will need to put choir as your FIRST CHOICE for an elective.
