Research Topic: Study of Multiphase Flows using Advanced Numerical Techniques
Research Supervisor: Dr. Bo Kong [Assistant Professor, Chemical Engineering, GTIIT]
Duties:
• Visualization of the stationary behavior of a non-buoyant elliptical particle subjected to shear flow accomplished using a Signed Distance Field - Immersed Boundary Method (SDF-IBM).
• Computational Fluid Dynamics – Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM) to decipher interesting physics exhibited by a dilute cluster of particles falling under influence of gravity.
• The advantages and disadvantages of using the Two-Fluid Model (TFM) for flow visualization of regular bubble patterns in a pulsed fluidized bed were analyzed.
• The Volume of Fluid Model (VoF) was used to track the interfacial changes of a liquid droplet impinging from the air onto an immiscible liquid surface.
MGMs College of Engineering and Technology, Kamothe, Navi Mumbai
Subjects taught: Thermodynamics, Process modeling
Duties:
The position involved teaching Thermodynamics to second-year Mechanical Engineering undergraduate students. Besides, I was also in-charge of taking programming sessions for the subject of Bio-Process Modelling and Simulation to final year undergrad Bio-Technology students. These sessions included an introduction to MATLAB programming which included solving linear, non-linear equations, ODE, PDE, and integral equations using various numerical methods. Also, these sessions included thermodynamic modeling of various chemical processes and kinetic modeling of homogeneous reactors.

Research Topic: Direct Numerical Simulations of Flow Patterns in Multiparticle Systems
Research Supervisor: Prof. Ashwin W. Patwardhan [Professor, Chemical Engineering, ICT Mumbai]
Research Co-supervisor: Prof. Jyeshtharaj B. Joshi [Emeritus Professor of Eminence, Chemical Engineering, ICT Mumbai]
Summary: The objective of this work is to obtain fully resolved flow patterns for flow past single and multiple spheres at moderate to high Reynolds numbers using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS). The physical insights obtained from the high fidelity simulations would be then applied for optimization and scale-up of chemical reactors. Structure identification would be done to relate the transport phenomena in multiparticle reactors with those predicted from DNS. A rational understanding of the complex flow processes would be developed for multiparticle systems on a scientific basis replacing the existing heuristic and empirical models.

Research Topic: Computational Fluid Dynamic Modelling of a Postulated Methanol Pool Fire
Research Supervisor: Dr. S. Suresh [Head of the Department, Department of Chemical Engineering]
Summary: Safety assessment for methanol pool fires was carried out using Finite Volume Method (FVM) based software package Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). Simulations were performed for a postulated scenario of a potential confined pool fire of 2m2, due to a possible rupture in a methanol storage tank placed in a closed room. Validation of the model was done by comparing the predictions from FDS against those from empirical models. Appropriate safety measures were suggested.
