For many years, members of the Tiverton community, led by resident Barbara Pelletier, have contemplated the idea of establishing a dog park in our town. The biggest obstacle has been locating an ideal parcel of land to contain it. Our vision of the dog park is not simply just a place for dogs to exercise and socialize, but for their humans to do so as well. Dog parks are known to bring people together and to foster a sense of community. Upon the death in 2019 of Mr. Raymond Jones, Tiverton's long time Animal Control Officer, animal lover, and avid community service proponent, the decision to move from the idea phase to the action phase was made, and the naming of the proposed dog park after Mr. Jones is a fitting tribute to his long legacy of service to our town. The RL Jones Memorial Dog Park Committee was created, working to identify the needs of the park for Tiverton, and travelling to other dog parks in the region for ideas and advice. Three parcels of land within Tiverton were reviewed for feasibility. The Committee, after discussions with Town Officials, settled on the plot of land abutting the Tiverton Library, Tiverton Fire Station 3, and a few private residences. Department leaders from the Library, Fire Department, Police Department, Public Works, Recreation Commission, and the Town Administrator have expressed support for the location. The unwelcome intrusion of the COVID19 Virus slowed down progress for a time, but in June 2020, The Town Council approved the 2.179 acre plot of land, and the Tiverton Dog Park Advisory Committee was made an official town committee by the Town Council. In 2021, an all-volunteer corps of residents and businesses worked tirelessly to clear the land and maintain healthy trees within the park's boundaries. Now the Committee is pivoting toward building, equipping, and getting the word out that our proposed dog park is ready to kick up some dust!
