All You Need to Know About Surapadma
Surapadma, an asura and son of Rishi Kashyaba, served as king of Veera Mahendrapuri. As the sage engaged in deep meditation, his children eventually matured into beings known as asuras. Despite being an Asura, Surapadma was a devout follower of Lord Shiva and spent most of his time meditating on his most revered god. As a reward for his steadfast devotion, Lord Shiva bestowed upon Surapadman a boon that gave him the ability not to be killed or defeated by anyone in this world, with the sole exception of any descendants of Lord Shiva.
In other words, Surapadman was invincible. Surapadman became so conceited as a result of the unlimited boon bestowed on him by Lord Shiva that he was able to subjugate the three legendary worlds: heaven, earth and hell. Every deva was kidnapped as a prisoner and subjected to various painful tests. The eternal beings of heaven were put in charge of performing menial jobs.
A Brief About the Birth of Lord Karthikeya
Once they put their faith in Lord Shiva to save them from his situation, Lord Shiva opened his third eye and proceeded to emit six different sparks. These sparkles reached Saravana Poigai, also known as the heavenly lake, and there, the divine sparkles metamorphosed into six babies. The Lord sent six Karthika houris to care for these children. After that, the holy couple travelled to Saravana Poigai, and Goddess Shakthi lovingly fused the newborns to become Lord Karthikeya, also known as Subramaniyan or Murugan, who has six faces and twelve arms and is responsible for the protection of his worshipers.
As he grew older, Lord Aarumuga (another name of Lord Subramanya) became an expert in military strategy, and because he was also extremely attractive, he was promoted to the position of commander-in-chief of the Gods. Following the instructions given by Lord Shiva, he led his army to Tiruchendur to release the Devas from their horrible servitude and set them free. To save the Devas and avoid conflict, his subordinate Veerabahu was sent as an ambassador to speak with Surapadma. As a result of his failure, Lord Murugan immediately began preparations for war. Although he had lost his brothers, Surapadma refused to surrender, and as a result, the conflict lasted another five days. At last, Lord Karthikeya's Vel put an end to Surapadma.
An Overview of Surapadma's Transformation Into Peacock
Lord Murugan granted Surapadma's wish and transformed him into a peacock, serving as Lord Murugan's means of transportation. The Devas were overcome by the spirit of Lord Karthikeya while celebrating the great achievement at Thiruchendur, which is located in the southernmost part of the Indian subcontinent. Still today, tens of millions of worshipers make their way to Tiruchendur to participate in the heavenly celebrations.
