Project 1: Trapped ion based programmable 5 qubit Quantum Computer

Construct fully programmable 5 qubit quantum computer using a trapped ion system. The qubit (Yb171+) can be trapped under ultrahigh vacuum which reduces interaction with its surroundings and has proven to be one of the most noise-free qubits. We use lasers and RF waves to control individual qubits and their quantum entanglement in order to perform various quantum algorithms. Specifically, we plan to perform quantum entanglement on arbitrary two pairs of qubits with the time scale faster than 10 μs. (Please check our NEWS)

Project 2: Trapped ion based scanning probe microscopy

Utilize the best resonator "atom" to image and characterize electronic and magnetic structure of surfaces and 2D materials. Electrostatic/magnetic interaction between the trapped atom and surface atoms can affect the trapped atom's energy levels and the atom's Doppler velocity. We plan to develop scanning probe based on the trapped ion system.

Project 3: Electron spin resonance - scanning probe

We plan to construct scanning probe combined with optics and RF components.
